About...Productions introduces its newest theaterwork-in-progress,
Adobe Punk, with a series of events. Each event will have a reading of the work-in-progress script with an interactive panel of unique guests in dialogue with the audience. The reading will include the work-in-progress music/sound design; and the work-in-progress set design will also be presented. Actors for the reading are: Váneh Assadourian, Alena Brophy, and Eddie Ruiz.
Adobe Punk is a work of historical fiction set in the early '80s in working-class Bell Gardens It will tell the story of three young punk music fans who find refuge in what turns out to be one of the oldest adobe homes in L.A. County (built by the Lugo family in 1844). The trio -- Latinx, Lebanese-American, and Anglo twenty-somethings -- are in the midst of their own artistic coming-of-age when they discover the house’s deep roots. This accidental act of historical discovery leads them to question their relationship to their neighborhood, their dreams, and the house itself.
Based on an idea by 24-year old Gabriel Garza, the play will be written and directed by Garza and Producing Artistic Director Theresa Chavez, a mother and son team and 7th and 8th generation Lugos, who share a passion for exploring L.A. history. It will take cues from a set of L.A.-based punk songs that will be re-imagined by arranger/musician Sage Lewis. Set designer Dorothy Hoover joins the team to envision the house at the center of the story. Her work-in-progress set model will be presented. The full-production premiere is set for 2021.
