Films about the Life and Work of San Francisco’s Beloved Artist Ruth Asawa
At the Roxie Theater, January 23, 2014, 6:30 pm
January 15, 2014 - San Francisco, CA: Ruth Asawa, who passed away in 2013, was a San Francisco icon. Nationally recognized, she was an artist, an educator, a community activist, and a symbol for how art can touch the lives of people young and old. One institution she left to San Francisco as part of her legacy is Ruth’s Table, a multi-generational center for creative aging, built around the work table Asawa donated and the ideas that Asawa inspired.
On Thursday, January 23rd, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, at the Roxie Theater (3117 16th St., San Francisco CA 94110) Ruth’s Table hosts a special screening of two films about the renowned San Francisco artist and educator: Academy of Art University's, Bob Toy's documentary, Ruth Asawa: Roots of an Artist; and Svetlana Butnaru's short film, Hearing Voices: The Ruth's Table Story. Proceeds from this special event will directly benefit Ruth’s Table.
Now in its fourth year, Ruth’s Table is a non-profit organization in San Francisco’s Mission District located on the ground floor of Bethany Center Senior Housing. More information about Ruth’s Table’s work using art, music, dance, and creativity to enhance the lives of both Bethany Center residents and members of the local community, can be found at ruthstable.org.
This special benefit event begins with a reception at 6:30 pm, where you can meet many of the staff, instructors, and participants of this remarkable community resource. The screening will start at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person, available online at roxie.com or at the door (please note: cash only at the door).
The event is co-sponsored by Friends of Ruth's Table (FORT), and Bethany Center Senior Housing (BCSH). For more information contact Megan Coss, mcoss@ruthstable.org or 415-642-1000.
