July 26, 2024 (Los Angeles, CA) – Los Angeles punk-jazz ensemble, Carnage Asada, release new psilocybin-inspired video for the single, “Psychedelic Experiment,” shot on location in Northeast Los Angeles. Watch HERE. The new studio album,
Head On A Platter, drops August 23, 2024 (Historical Records).
"The ‘Psychedelic Experiment’ video is a tribute to the hallucination scenes in ‘60s psychedelic movies like
Psych Out and
Skidoo,” says video director and band co-founder Dave Travis. “It is the story of a journey where things go from normal to enhanced to euphoric to intense to terrifying. A journey through Northeast Los Angeles and a journey through the center of your mind. It was also inspired by the movie
Falling Down in which Michael Douglas travels across Los Angeles and loses his mind more and more on each stop.”
“Computer technology has made it so much easier and quicker and better to do hallucination scenes. Things that used to have to be done optically frame by frame are now possible in minutes by just setting parameters.”
“I smoked out Timothy Leary once,” Travis continues. “He told me the Nintendo was the Guttenberg of our generation. At the time I didn't understand, but he turned out to be correct. Computers changed the way society communicates and functions in a way that almost nothing has changed it since printing. Now there are multiple realities like he predicted, the lived physical reality and the reality of the screen and the speaker. Also, different group realities exist to different groups of people, as different groups of people share different networks and their screens and circuits make one group believe in one reality and a different group see reality differently. Just like the way Martin Luther made people in one part of Europe perceive a metaphysical reality different than another by harnessing the power of printing, now people can bend people's realities with computers."
“The lyrics to ‘Psychedelic Experiment’ are the recollection of my past LSD, and psilocybin mushroom experiences,” says singer/lyricist George Murillo. "I started the ‘Acid Trips’ at about the age of 14-15. Some were very beautiful, mind expanding. Others could be dark and intense. Borderline bad trips. I had to remind myself of the reality of ingesting the psychedelic. Bring myself back ‘down to earth’. I had many trips over the years, inside my mind. Life itself is a ‘Psychedelic Experience’ for me now. I no longer have a need to ingest psychedelic substances.” Drummer Steve Reed adds: "’Psychedelic Experiment’ is my favorite songs off the album. I love playing it with the band. It takes me to a magical place, floating along and along and along in a Jerry Garcia cloud.”
Carnage Asada are an integral part of the tapestry and history of the Los Angeles punk scene. Featuring members who’ve done time in bands such as Legal Weapon, Saccharine Trust, Alice Bag Band and the BellRays their history is indisputable.
"I am really impressed,” says Mike Watt (Minutemen, Iggy & The Stooges, Dos, Firehose). “I dug them when they started, but where they have taken those beginnings really is special for me, witnessing them create their own Carnage Asada sound, something all their own. Big love, truly.”
The three founding members in this line-up (David Jones, George Murillo, Dave Travis,) originally coalesced in the early 1980s while attending junior high school together, bonding over punk rock bands like Black Flag, X, and The Germs. By 1993, Carnage Asada was officially formed. The band has gigged regularly since then playing virtually every legendary L.A. venue including Al’s Bar, Mr. T’s Bowl, Bar Deluxe, and Travis’ many self-produced stages including early generator parties and the club he owned called Café NELA (2013-2019).
Head On A Platter was recorded at Wasatch Studios in Los Angeles, California, and engineered by David O. Jones and his son Sebastian Jones. Carnage Asada will appeal to fans of The Minutemen, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Black Flag, The Stooges, Hawkwind, Captain Beefheart, War and The Mothers of Invention.
