September 28, 2022 (Los Angeles, CA) – After releasing a string of punchy new wave singles (" Hide," " New You," " Scream 4 Love" and “ Lucky”) Basic Elements returns with their most ambitious track yet. “Shakin’” is a raucous romp featuring shades of Violent Femmes and Sparks with playful, wry lyrics and a singalong chorus that stays in your head long after the track’s tight 3:26 runtime. Like the band’s previous releases, Basic Elements originally wrote the song in 1985 (when its members were in their teens) so it’s no coincidence “ Shakin’” sounds like it would fit right in with the forthcoming
Life Moves Pretty Fast – The John Hughes Mixtapes box set. The band’s authentic ‘80s sound is what caught the ear of VMA winning director, Chris Applebaum ( Rihanna, Fountains of Wayne, Britney Spears), who pitched the idea of doing an homage to The Breakfast Club for the band’s first foray into music videos.
Despite the opportunity to work with such a prestigious director, Basic Elements took a step back for the video to present the song in the context in which it was written – rebellious teenage angst. Rather than star in the video themselves, the band made the video a family affair, casting their own daughters to represent an all-girl version of Basic Elements, including bass player William Bowling’s two daughters, Kansas and Parker, both of whom are featured prominently as Manson Girls in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (the former also stars in the music video, “Caution” by The Killers and has directed her own music videos for Death Valley Girls and Collapsing Scenery). Together, along with synth player, Jonathan Goldman’s two teenage girls, and Applebaum’s own teen, the quintet perfectly mend the gap between Gen-X and Gen-Z, which is what Basic Elements’ music is all about. According to Applebaum, “I loved “Shakin’” the second I heard it, but it wasn’t until my kid said it was “cool” that I knew I had to make this video.” Singer, John Denis, says: “Shakin’ was all about trying to play it cool even though you’re dying on the inside 100 times a day. I think every kid can relate to that, plus some adults.”
To celebrate the song’s release and its accompanying video, Basic Elements will headline a live show on Saturday, November 19th at The Mint. More exciting news surrounding this show, including other LA-based bands and an exciting special guest will be announced closer to the date. It will be the first time the band has played live since their packed pre-Covid reunion show in 2019.
In addition to playing their released singles, Basic Elements will debut two new songs, which marks their first new music in over 30 years. Of the new songs, synth player Jonathan Goldman says, “For most people all these songs are brand new, but to be able to come together after so much time and write new songs that feel consistent with the rest of our stuff, but also in line with what we’re hearing today is incredibly exciting.”
Following the Los Angeles show, Basic Elements is plotting a springtime “homecoming” show in Phoenix, AZ where they spent their youth playing alongside local legends like, Gin Blossoms, Gentlemen Afterdark, IRS recording artists, Caterwaul, and touring bands like Bolshoi and Gene Loves Jezebel.
Basic Elements’ producer, Ed Buller, is behind the highly anticipated new release,
Autofiction by Suede and White Lies’ most recent hit record,
As I Try Not to Fall Apart. “Shakin’” marks the last track Basic Elements recorded with Buller. As with their previous singles, the band will release limited edition cassingles of the song featuring the Buller produced studio recording and an archival B-Side of the original song recorded in a hot Phoenix garage with the band in 1985. A vinyl press anthology of all the band’s singles is scheduled for 2023. It will chart the musical evolution of Basic Elements with archival B-sides of the original recordings to compliment the studio-produced Buller sessions.
Since their October 2020 debut, Basic Elements has struck a chord with the new wave/post-punk crowd. Their music is in regular rotation on 93.9 KWSS FM (Arizona’s top alternative station) as well as on legendary DJ Rodney Bingenheimer’s SiriusXM show. The LA Weekly premiered the band’s lyric video for “New You,” and they appeared as guests on the Rolling Stone ranked podcast, The Watt from Pedro Show, hosted by renowned Minutemen bass player, Mike Watt. Basic Elements also found new fans on the Twitch stream hosted by Minneapolis DJ Jake Rudh and Slicing Up Eyeballs mastermind, Matt Sebastian, which pulls lively virtual crowds.
In a time where contemporary artists strive for that '80s sound, Basic Elements is the real deal. Check out their current releases on Spotify and all other major platforms and follow their social for news about upcoming releases, shows and a healthy dose of pure, uncut 1985.
