Busy July for Mills Design
MAT 1220 Nola Excels in the Baltic
The latest MAT1220 Nola arrived in the Baltic in June and immediately turned on the speed! In her first event Gotland Runt, the region’s most important event billed as the worlds largest offshore, she took second under ORC scaring the big boats! She then followed this up by winning the Moonsund Regatta in Estonia under ORC which combines inshores and offshores over a week of racing. Next for her is the RORC Baltic Sea Race, watch this space for results.
Cork Week Win for Blitz
Blitz our King 40 design owned by Nick Burns won Volvo Cork Week with a day to spare after a battle with Michaels Wilson’s Cape 31 Shotgunn. Nick who races his King 40 Witchcraft in Hong Kong bought Blitz for its strong performance in Asian conditions, but took the opportunity to race it with his Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club crew at Cork Week before it gets shipped east.
Counting mostly podium finishes in the 10 race event the closest competition was Shotgunn, hot from the Cape 31 event in San Remo, Italy, with the Capes Antix and Akheilos rounding out the Mills entries in Class 0. With its friendly and fun ambience Crosshaven reminded everyone what a great event Cork Week is both on and off the water.
One Design Dominance at New York Yacht Club Race Week
The largest One Design fleet at the New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport was the IC37 we drew for the Club. With 17 boats on the start line the lead was up for grabs until the final race, when Kuai of Daniel Thielman was able to put the series to bed.
The Cape 31 was our second One Design fleet in the event, which saw Drew Friedes Pacific Yankee take the title from Class newcomer Tom Holthus with BadPak. Friedes, fresh from leading Cape 31’s to a 1, 2, 3 domination of the podium in the ORC Class D at the previous NYYC Annual Regatta, felt the combination of One Design competition and handicap performance ensured the Capes would grow rapidly in the US. Also sailing at Race Week for the first time was the new MAT 1220 Heatwave owned by Gary Weisberg.
Cape 31 One Design UK and Europe Events
Flying Jenny won the HYS Cape 31 UK Nationals after intense competition over the three days culminated in a two-boat battle in the final race deciding the outcome. Run from Lymington across a range of conditions in Christchurch Bay Sandy Askew’s Flying Jenny team counted nothing higher than a 7th to take the title.
Meanwhile on the Cape 31 Med Circuit Round 6 in San Remo was won by Lennard van Oeveren and his team on Motions, who sailed a strong regatta to win their first event. Round 6 was seen as a test event for the European Championships which will be held in San Remo in November, with more than 20 boats expected including some from the UK and US fleets to make it the most exciting event of the year. There is still time to get a new boat to Italy for the Europeans (and the practice event preceding it), contact worldwide sales agents 31 North!
Perhaps the result this year that best exemplifies the Cape 31’s prowess across the full range of inshore, offshore, One Design and handicap is Jubatus which raced in the 64th Malta-Palermo Offshore race, one of the Meds oldest events. She was overall winner of the 90m mile offshore, under both ORC and IRC. These boats do everything!
