Owego, NY- Anniversaries are a time for remembering and celebration. However, when the anniversary is of a natural disaster, emotions can be mixed. One year ago our community suffered the worst flooding in recent history. The Village of Owego and some community members are working together to recognize the event’s impact on our community and celebrate the progress the community has made in the last year.
Jana Ingalsbe, Long Term Recovery Committee Member said “Rebuilding is a long process and we aren’t done yet. We believe it’s important to gather as a community and celebrate the fact that we are here, we will rebuild and we will continue to move forward together.”
To celebrate the progress made towards recovery the community has 2 events planned. Starting at 5pm on Friday, September 7, The Village of Owego is hosting a block party in downtown Owego complete with amazing specials from downtown merchants, live music and fireworks. The event continues Saturday, September 8 from 11-4 as Tioga Opportunities, Inc. hosts a community picnic at the Countryside Community Center on Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego. The community picnic will feature a free BBQ, bingo, games, bounce house and lots of goodies for the kids including a display of fire trucks, free bike helmets and car seats.
The fireworks will be launched from Draper Park. Phoebe Morris, Deputy Mayor of Owego, was quoted saying “We were unable to use the fireworks originally scheduled for Hickories Park on the Fourth of July, and we are so excited to be able to repurpose them and share them with the community for this event.” The Village of Owego and the event planning committee would like to thank all corporate and private donors for their generous support of the event.
