Ahead of Schedule!
Greetings from the the Winding Stream!
Great news. We are currently six days into our campaign and we are already at 12% of our goal. It has been shown that one of the signs of a successful Kickstarter campaign is achieving 10% of funding within the first week, so we feel that we're currently well on our way!
Thanks to those of you who’ve pledged and spread the word! It’s a huge boost!
To aid with the fundraising, we’ve been getting great coverage in blogs and online magazines. Here are a couple you might like. One is my story about meeting Johnny Cash: Broadsheet360.
Another is an interview with me about the story of our film’s trajectory: Musicians for Equal Opportunities for Women.
It’s all pretty great and there are other developments I’ll be sharing with you in coming updates. But there’s one thing that’s happening that could be a great opportunity for the film,
If we can finish it by the end of the year!
The amazing film director Allison Anders (
Gas, Food, Lodging,
Grace of My Heart,
Mi Vida Loca) is a friend of mine and of
The Winding Stream. Allison wrote the other day to let me in on something that has since been announced publicly - that she is going to direct a film about June Carter Cash for Lifetime Television. They begin shooting next month and the show will air late this year or early next.
When Allison told me about this she was concerned about whether this would be a problem for
The Winding Stream, wondering if this would be seen as a competitive project. It was extremely nice of her to be concerned, but I assured her that, historically speaking, documentaries and narrative films that cover similar subject matter actually provide a certain synergy to one another. They’re complementary. This has happened with two PBS documentaries I’ve been involved with –
Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back and
In the Path of a Killer Volcano. Both benefited from subsequent press from other films – respectively
Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks and
Dante’s Peak starring Pierce Brosnan. It was great cross-pollination and these films drew substantial attention to our documentaries.
But of course, there is one catch:
I need to finish the film. It has to be wrapped up sometime close to when Allison’s June Carter film is done!
Now, that’s been our goal anyway and the very reason for this Kickstarter campaign. But this really makes it imperative that we finish by the end of the year!
So, if you’ve pledged already, please help us get the word out. We need to make our goal!
If you haven’t yet pledged, we hope you will. Please don’t wait. Keeping the momentum going is really critical to the success of a Kickstarter campaign.

And now, just for fun, a photo for you to enjoy.
It’s Johnny Cash’s high school photo.
