Nashville Cats
Hi!
You know you’ve been to a place a lot when you reflexively refer to the airport there by its three letter acronym. That’s the case for me as I write you from BNA. That’s Nashville’s airport designation.
It’s early - ouch, 5:15 AM – here at BNA, so I’m a little weary but still very happy. I just had a pretty great week here, meeting with various people about The Winding Stream and attending a conference I wish I’d had the sense to go to years ago. But I’ll be a regular from now on.

The event in question was the International Country Music Conference, a really information-intensive gathering of academics, writers and some serious followers of the genre. Two and a half days of scholarly papers and presentations might sound like tough going until you realize they’re on topics like Cowpunk in LA, the history of Mos-rite guitars and records, a look at how co-writing songs has changed the country music business, a study of how the term “hillbilly music” turned into “country”, or an intimate panel discussion with some of the original hit making session folks from the Nashville Sound era - the real Nashville Cats. As you might imagine, the presenters were as interesting as their papers and it was the most relaxed academic conference I’d ever attended. Every day ended with a pickin’ session – even one that took place at the fabled RCA Studio B.
I’d been invited to the conference to show clips and talk about The Winding Stream, a real honor when I think about the company I was keeping – vaguely intimidating even while I realized the crowd was quite friendly and supportive. The film clips were really well-received and people were excited to see more. Some even said they were moved to tears. Score!
I also got to spend time this week with Carter-Cash family members – Laura and John Carter Cash and Anita Carter’s daughter Lorrie Davis Bennett. I have to say that all of the family members in this project have been more than gracious and kind to me. I’m very appreciative.
I also got to reconnect with Kevin Lamb at Peermusic who has been very helpful as we get a handle on what Carter compositions will be in the film. And I got to meet some new (to me) folks at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum who are very open to screening the film.
So, now I’m more charged up then ever to finish this!
Can you help us?
As I write this we’re just a little short of 30% of our Kickstarter campaign goal. That means we’ve raised almost $15,000, which is fantastic in just 3+ weeks. But we still need to raise $35,000. In a little over four weeks! So, if you’ve been thinking of pledging to support the film, now would be a good time. Remember, Kickstarter is “all or nothing.” We have to reach our goal of $50,000 or we don’t get anything. And it has to be donated through the Kickstarter page or it doesn’t count toward the goal! We’ve got great rewards already, plus we’ve added some new ones as well. A couple of these are limited offers so pledge now if you’re interested!
For a $35 Pledge
A special gift courtesy of John Carter and Laura Cash, this reward is a First Day Cover of the US Postal Service’s Carter Family stamp with Johnny and June’s return address on the envelope. We have only a small number to offer, so act fast.
For $45 Pledge
A beautiful giclee print of the Carter Family signed by our friend and graphic novel artist David Lasky. (His full-length Carter Family graphic novel, Don’t Forget This Song will be released soon by Abrams Publishing). David’s work for this has an evocative, vintage feel. You’re really gonna want one!
For $150 Pledge
A unique opportunity to spend time with Rosanne and Tara Cash. On Monday, August 27 from 5 – 7 PM, we’ll be hosting a cocktail party honoring these Cash Sisters at a swank place TBA in Portland, Oregon. Beverages, hors d’oeuvres, film clips and conversation! As of this writing we have only 41 tickets left for this pledge level. Act fast. The offer ends when the Kickstarter campaign ends on June 28!
So, if you can, head over to the Kickstarter and help us out!
Well, that’s the latest. Thanks, as always, for your interest and support.
Best,
Beth Harrington and
The Winding Stream Team
