Putting your creativity into marketing |
Hello again,. Creativity is a mysterious thing.
Just because you're creative, doesn't mean you can draw portraits (much to the confusion of the general population).
So I am here to remind you that just because being good at marketing requires creativity, doesn't mean it should come easily to you.
To spend all your time making, and then be expected to channel yet more creativity into a marketing strategy can feel ludicrous and overwhelming. But there may be easy ways to bring some of that creative zest from your practice, into your marketing strategy. I want to share my own way of approaching creative problems (especially at the end of a long day doing "makey" things).
I am taking this opportunity to share some different perspectives on the topic too. Career coach Jaz Broughton (Just Jaz) shares what happens when we have the word "creative" attached to our career, and Rachel Walker (The Play Philosophy) shares how to reignite creativity when you are feeling a little creatively drained.
If you are feeling inspired and need an outlet, I have dropped a few trending sounds down below with instructions on how to use them. That way you can get stuck in making a reel or TikTok before that energy leaves you!

So where were we.... ah yes:
Creativity is a mysterious thing.
If you were 'taught' to think creatively, you may have learnt to work through a project sort of like this...
If you are not sure where to start with marketing, remember that you already have the ingredients in your toolbox! Copying and pasting systems we already use in our sketchbooks could make life easier when trying to be creative in promoting ourselves.
Here is an example of how this 'wide and then focused thinking' system can be used in your marketing. In this instance, to help decide which stories to tell online and in person, to reinforce your personal brand:
The key in this system is always to 'focus in' again, so that your wild creative spirit can be understood by others.
Another example of how to use this system is in your marketing content creation:
- Throw everything you've got at the wall and follow your flow,
- Then evaluate what has worked and what feels aligned
after the creation bit.
This way you are free to make all the random TikToks, LinkedIn posts, YouTube videos or business cards you like, without feeling constrained by the pressure for it to be "good". When you are feeling so stressed about the process that your shoulders come all the way up to your ears just thinking about it - it's time to become less precious. Make for the sake of making for a bit, find what feels good, and see what your audience responds to.
This is just one example of how to cultivate creative thinking, you might have other examples from your own journey as a maker (hit reply and let me know what works for you). So next time you need to make some content for you Instagram or perhaps touch up your personal branding, think about the ways you think creatively in your craft and use them in your marketing too!

Now over to two people whose opinion on this topic I hold in high regard.
"Do something just because you FEEL like it.
What are both kids and dogs (some of the most playful creatures) good at? Doing things without purpose, just because they want to. There's a relaxing freedom to it that reignites creativity.
Move playfully. Dance, wiggle, bounce (my personal favourite).
Physically changing your body position, physically changes your thinking and doing it playfully adds that extra boost of serotonin.
Get metaphorical.
Represent your problem as something else. Build it out of LEGO, doodle it as a character. This helps you to see your problem from a literal different perspective which can spark new ideas and solutions." |

and Jaz Broughton of Just Jaz, on what it means to have the label of "creative" in your career:
"When you label anything it comes with spoken and unspoken rules and parameters.
Most are made up or coming from the disparaging voices in our minds e.g. creators have to create all the time, make it look easy or it should feel easy. Which can be stifling. A container for our creations or our art which is unhelpful. Often when we think about the times we are most creative it comes from being boundless, having open space and time, tapping into all the possibilities. Not in the container.
My biggest tip for raging against the machine that is this container, is to also share your positive beliefs: "I'm a creative who likes to experiment with x", "My career is creative, some days more than others".
You define your own creativity.
I see my own career as creative: I create coaching experiences, I create written works, content, podcasts and more, so my version is "My career is creative because I like creating coaching experiences"... this means that folks can understand I'm creative...without comparing me to Kendrick Lamar or Beyonce."

Feeling inspired to put something out there and start a conversation about you and your work? Here are some trending sounds that are perfect for makers right now:
This could be anything you've been working on, it doesn't have to be a finished thing
Example: Tying on your warp, but it's long enough to get a metric tonne of samples
For that moment when: you find someone who appreciates all the hard work you put into your craft and it feels amazing
Example: You've left your painting outside to dry, the wind flipped it over and there's paint everywhere
Example: Wonky fabric edges, to clean straight lines, *practice*
Example: Show the unfinished projects, and then show the Netflix show you are watching instead
Now go make one of these into a Reel / TikTok, and remind people how great you are!!
