We are delighted to invite you to an evening with the American author Karen Joy Fowler, talking about her wonderful new novel
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves.
This is one of the finest novels to cross my path in recent years. It is moving, funny, marvellous, difficult and beautiful. It made me remember why it is that I read novels in the first place.
I'm not alone in thinking this. The novel has already been awarded the 2014 PEN/Faulkner Award in the US, and has now been long-listed for the new International Man Booker Prize. (The Man Booker is, for the first time this year, open to books from America. Only three novels from the US were chosen. I believe this one will go on to be short-listed and might easily win the prize.)
The Guardian's Liz Jensen reviewed it thus:
'Many a novel has devoted itself to exploring variations of Larkin's lament about what mums and dads do to their kids. But if any other book has done it as exhilaratingly as this achingly funny, deeply serious heart-breaker... and made it ring true for the whole of mankind, I've yet to read it. This is a moral comedy to shout about from the treetops.'
A few years ago Ms Fowler had great success with the best-selling
Jane Austen Book Club. To have her visit Maleny is an extraordinary coup. For more information please click here. For a full program of Brisbane Writers Festival events click here.

Introducing,
Claire Dunn
author of
'My Year Without Matches'
The evening will open with a short interview and reading from Claire Dunn whose recent non-fiction account of her year in the bush has been attracting a lot of attention.
Claire had been working for several years in the environmental movement but was feeling increasingly burnt out and alienated. She decided to reconnect to nature in a most dramatic way.
My Year Without Matches is her take on what happened. You can visit her website here or listen to a podcast of the conversation she had with Richard Fidler here.

Henry Reynolds is arguably the most important Australian historian of our time. His books about Aboriginal-White interaction -
Why Weren't We Told?, The Other Side of the Frontier, The Whispering in Our Hearts - have recalibrated the way we view our nation.
His new book,
The Forgotten War, gives a systematic account of the causes and nature of the war between early settlers and Aboriginals.
Mr Reynolds will be in conversation with Steven Lang.
This event is organised in association with Reality Bites, the non-fiction festival held in Cooroy, and with Maleny's Celebration of Books.
'Introducing' author to be announced. Tickets on sale from September 1.
