The Current Rates of Substance Use, Depression
and Anxiety Within the Legal Profession: A Discussion of the New ABA/Hazelden
Betty Ford Collaborative Research Project
The ABA and the
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation have just released the most
comprehensive study yet conducted on addictive behavior and
mental health among among licensed attorneys
throughout the United States:
“The Prevalence of Substance Use and Other Mental Health
Concerns Among American Attorneys.”
The results are concerning:
21% of lawyers qualify as problem drinkers, 28% struggle
with some degree of depression, and 19% have symptoms of
anxiety.
Patrick R.
Krill, J.D., Director of the Hazelden Betty Ford
Foundation's Legal Professionals Program, and Joan
Bibelhausen, Executive Director of Minnesota Lawyers
Concerned for Lawyers, will discuss the findings of the
study and its implications for legal professionals and the
practice.
