Story
Delicious Spoonfuls nonprofit was created to give people with Special Needs (including Down Syndrome and Autism) an opportunity to gain training and job skills leading to employment in our mobile ice cream cart operation. they will be able to take these skills to other work if they choose.
Our first hire was Evan Land. Evan at over 40 years old could not hold a job. He was diagnosed with Paranoid schizophrenia, Autism and Cerebral Palsy. Several times he was scheduled to work with us and at the last minute he would call and say his stomach was bothering him. As much as he says he looks forward to working in our events, he gets stomach problems when he gets anxiety at the thought of working.
Another recent hire is William. He is our youngest employee at 18 years old. We met him when we brought our ice cream at an event at his school Space of Mind in Delray Beach where we saw him serving brownies that he had made along with his classmates. We took a liking to each other and have had him work at several events.
Sam is the most recent addition. I heard about him when his mother Judy was on a zoom with us and other parents of children with Special Needs in Yachad. We convinced her to relocate to South Florida where there was a larger Jewish community and services for people with Special Needs. Sam has Down Syndrome. At over 40 years old, Delicious Spoonfuls is also his first paid employment. He is challenged also by speech issues brought on by chemical sensitivity during Covid at his former group home in New York.
My son Adir is our unofficial manager. He is 30 years old and has Down Syndrome. He also works in Goodwill, so he works with us when it fits in with his scheduled days off. He is great at redirecting his co-workers when they get off track or have trouble with their assignment (scooping, adding syrups, sprinkles, whipped cream, cherries or other toppings)
Some of the organizations that hired us included Space of Mind school in Delray Beach, the Delray Beach Historical Society, the Sea Ranch Club,
