This month, we have both helpful and creative events and stories surfacing, and we hope to have as many people involved as possible! “Hey, Where’d You Get That Jacket?”
This past November, at the outset of winter heating season, a class of MS 126 6th graders visited the school’s boiler room to observe the installation of new energy-saving technology that will reduce the schools’ greenhouse gas emissions while saving money: a thermal jacket for the boiler. MS 126 students have been studying how their behaviors and habits contribute to the production of greenhouse gases and, as part of the Greenpoint Eco-Schools program, have set an ambitious goal to reduce energy usage by 10% or more!

History of Lead Contamination in Soil
Let’s hop on in a time machine for a second. Picture a vast, biodiverse, open space
inhabited by the Lenape Indians peacefully living alongside bears, wolves, songbirds, and salamanders, fish, and porpoises and whales in the harbor. In fact, with over 55 different ecological communities.
Then look out your window. Before the 19th century, the north corner of Brooklyn was owned by only a few families with farms. But as the borough expanded at a great rate, Greenpoint (or Green Point, named for its abundant, green farmland) soon transformed into the “industrial hub of Brooklyn.”

Starting with Greenpoint: Reflections and Recommendations from Greenpoint Eco-Schools Students
2016 was a great year for Greenpoint Eco-Schools. Among many other accomplishments, the four Greenpoint Eco-Schools (PS 31, PS 34, PS 110, & MS 126) kept thousands of pounds of waste out of landfills, created new native plant learning gardens, and took action to make their neighborhoods cleaner and greener.

2017 Newtown Creek Fund Request For Proposals
The Newtown Creek Environmental Benefits Program (NCEBP) was created as part of an agreement between New York State and New York City to upgrade the Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant and provide environmental benefits to the community. Funding is being administered through two organizations: the City Parks Foundation (CPF) and the Hudson River Foundation (HRF), through its New York City Environmental Fund (NYCEF).

2017 Water Resources Art & Poetry Contest
New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s 31st annual Water Resources Art & Poetry Contest. Second through twelfth grade students attending public, independent, charter or parochial schools (or homeschooled) in New York City and East and West of Hudson Watersheds are invited to create original art and compose poetry that reflects an appreciation for our shared water resources.

President’s Environmental Youth Award
Your project – or one you are sponsoring – could be an award winner. Apply or encourage a student you know to apply for PEYA and see what a difference they can make for the environment with an award-winning project. Applicants from all 50 states and U.S. territories are eligible to compete for a regional certificate of special recognition and a national Presidential award.Applications are now being accepted for the PEYA program. Applications are due March 1, 2017.
