Welcome to Our New Subscribers

A warm welcome to all the people who filled out the reader survey in our Belize Break contest sponsored by Tropic Air, Chabil Mar Villas, and Hatchet Caye Resort. If you're getting this newsletter for the first time, we're glad to have you. If you aren't really interested in high-end travel in Latin America, however, there's an unsubscribe button at the bottom.
As we expected, you're a wealthy, well-educated bunch that travels a lot internationally. Thanks for participating. Of course we can only have one winner and that was Emily W. of California. This time next month she'll be finishing up her honeymoon in Belize! |

More Airline Routes Opening in Central America
|
|
|
In a clear sign that the economies are picking up and more travelers are visiting, we keep getting news of new air routes in Central America. First of all, there are the local players and as we
noted earlier this week, Tropic Air can get you to and from Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
Nature Air travels goes from Costa Rica to Panama and Nicaragua. Low-cost Veca flies from its base in El Salvador to Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.
There have been many carriers coming into the area that may not be on the top of your list but are worth checking into. Southwest, Spirit, and Avianca have been active for a while. Full-service Copa (based in Panama) is the best airline in Latin America in many respects and keeps adding more connections. They recently ordered 61 new planes.
Air France will start flying between Paris and Costa Rica, with two weekly flights, starting November 2016. Lufthansa has recently launched a new direct flight between Frankfurt and Panama City, five times a week. Also, British Airways is now flying between London and Costa Rica.
Unfortunately the world's longest flight announced earlier this year---Dubai to Panama on Emirates Air---has been postponed. It looks like it's not going to happen in 2016 due to code-share complications.

We sent the last newsletter out mid-month and have also been busy switching out larger photos in our new design, so just two new hotel reviews to mention this month.
First up, we posted a detailed review of the third Vik property in Uruguay:
Bahia Vik. Like the other two (plus the one in Chile), it's stylish, artistic, and meant for those who don't have to sweat the rates. It took us a year and a half to get a review up but that's okay: it'll take you a year and a half to get a reservation in high season!
We have long lamented the lack of luxe lodging in Cuenca, Ecuador, a city that deserves to get more high-end tourists but still mainly appeals to migrating retirees.
Hotel Zahir 360 isn't going to change things overnight, but it at least adds a modern design option to the choices there.

We have plenty of material on the way this spring from correspondents who are checking out the best of the best in Mexico, Central America, and South America.
Next up will be a jungle lodge review from the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. We'll have a couple new hotel entries from Playa del Carmen.
Then a high-end land option in the Galapagos Islands and a timely update of the Trump Ocean Club in Panama. Now that the real estate slump seems to be at an end, we'll also be updating our story on real estate in San Miguel de Allende. Our associate editor wil be traveling through Argentina in late May, doing some reviews and updates there.
You can always keep up with what's new on
our blog, where we also like to try out some rum and tequila from the region now and then. You can also follow us on social media, including
YouTube and
Instagram.
If you run a business serving high-end travelers coming to Latin America, we're
the site you need to appear on. Check out our
very reasonable advertising rates.
See you next month,
Timothy Scott, Editor
