A Long and Short Road Trip, a Novelist's Portugal, and a Remote Stilt City Over Crocodiles |

The situation with borders, varients, and vaccines is still fluid, long after we hoped we'd be out of the woods on this. Many of our writers are still out and about though, or in the case of one story this month, interviewing someone who traveled thousands of kilometers overland.
That would be this month's story from Marco Ferrarese. He interviewed a fellow Italian who was attempting to ride all the way to the Tokyo Olympics on a Vespa, following in the tire tracks of someone who did it in 1964.
After reading the mishaps in
The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel, Lydia Carey puts the sleepy town of Tuizelo on the travel itinerary and then goes looking for life.
My story is about a quest to finally make it to the Grand Canyon, my country's greatest national wonder, which has kept eluding me since childhood. After a business trip to Vegas, it was time for a ride down Route 66 through Flagstaff to get to the big draw.
The stilt city of Ganvie, far from everything in rural Benin, has stood lopsided and humming with human-powered boats for more than half a millennium. James Dorsey finds his way there.
William Caverlee reviews three new travel books: An ambitious collection of travel-related history lessons, what to do each month in Europe, and pilgrimages to spiritual centers around the world..

Each month, as a newsletter subscriber, you've got a shot at winning something cool thanks to a gear sponsor contributing a prize. Most of you getting this newsletter don't bother to enter though, so you're letting someone else get the goodies.
In November, Stephen B. from Alaska experienced some nice beginner's luck and scored a pair of Bluetooth noise-canceling earbuds from Xfyro.
This month we're going to warm you up for winter travels. One subscriber who enters will receive a new outfit from 32 Degrees. One guy or gal will get to pick out a baselayer, an outerwear item, and an accessory (like a hat or scarf). Check out the options at that link.
This one is open to U.S. subscribers. To enter, you just need to answer the following questions:
1) What was Fabio Cofferati's final destination in his attempt to get to Tokyo?
2) What is the Lowell Observatory famous for discovering?
3) Who wrote
The Interior Silence?
All the answers are easily found in our new issue.
To enter, send the answers with your physical shipping address to editor (at) perceptivetravel.com or just reply to this newsletter with the answers and address.
Please spread the word if you like what you see! Share buttons are at the bottom of each story. If you know someone who appreciates quality travel writing and would like to receive this newsletter, pass it on! Or send them to the home page to subscribe.
Thanks,
