June 22, 2017,
Friends---
Maryland Environmental Services will be host a webinar on Thursday, June 29, starting at 6 pm to share work on creation of a Sediment Management Plan for DCL.
This is VERY important and we urge you to sign on.
To register, send your name and email
DCLevaluation@menv.com. Deadline for registration is noon on the 29th.
IMPORTANT: This is the first time the public, and especially the 500 plus property owners in the sediment impaired coves will have opportunity to hear from the MES. The report on the sediment management plan is due no later than 6/30/17 and this is the first opportunity for citizens and impacted residents will be briefed on the all-important project.
To be covered in the webinar:
"Garrett County’s contractors have performed a dredging evaluation to determine the most cost effective and environmentally and publicly acceptable location from which to dredge sediment from Deep Creek Lake. Ten lake coves have been identified as priority study areas: Arrowhead Cove, Harvey’s Cove, Poland Run Cove, Green Glade Cove, Hazelhurst Cove, Turkey Neck Cove, { known as Back Bay} Chadderton School Cove, Deep Creek Cove, Penn Cove, and Pawn Run Cove.
This webinar will review the following: potential funding options for potential dredging design and construction, previous studies performed, dredging methods, the evaluation process and results, estimated dredging costs, and next steps.
The webinar will be followed by a question and answer period."

Background: With DNR funds secured by Senator Edwards and Delegate Beitzel and supported by Friends of DCL, the County has contracted with Maryland Environmental Services to produce a sediment management plan and a grant application to the Waterway Improvement Fund for a pilot dredging project. More information and copy of contract, check Friends of DCL website,

Our questions:
Is there a priority list for dredging? What were the criteria used to create it?
What are results of the bathymetric map and what are changes since 2011 MGS study?
How will citizen be able to participate in shaping this work?
And, how effective is a webinar format for educating and involving DCL property owners? Is this format comparable to a well-publicized community forum, such as the one Friends of DCL hosted last fall on models for sediment removal in other lakes?
