3.DARWIN, NATURAL SELECTION AND THE FINCHES OF THE GALAPAGOS

When Darwin was a young man he hired onto an English ship as a naturalist – keeping a meticulous chronicle of the events of natural science encountered on this 6-year pioneering voyage to the Pacific. New discoveries of flora, fauna, navigation, coastal mapping, weather, ocean currents, anthropology, and much more were background for his classic work
On the Origin of the Species.
Soon the most published book in the English language, even to the present.
Some idea of the hardships these seamen endured can be glimpsed in Russell Crowe’s classic film
Master and Commander, which accurately portrays a voyage to the Galapagos around the Horn at about that same time.
It was during this adventure aboard
The Beagle that Darwin amassed the research that would support his momentous discovery of Evolution, which was to restructure the scientific world from then on. Darwin called this new field Natural Selection. Ultimately, it turned out to be a very simple and elegant first look at the origin of all species on earth, and their interrelationships. The theory included the notion of Survival of the Fittest.
At its core, the idea was that minor variations within a species, if they offered the slightest advantage for survival and a better chance of reproduction – those traits would become permanent and be reinforced over long periods of time, and gradually change the species to the version most likely to survive. And this was the process for the evolution of every new species. Apply this principle from the beginning of life on earth to the present time, and you’re starting to get the picture.
Beginning with the years he spent in South America and continuing the entire voyage, Darwin took samples and made drawings and descriptions of hundreds of plants and animals. But it wasn’t till he got to the Galapagos islands that he began to notice something no one else had ever thought about – what defined a species.
In his studies of birds, he noticed that there were many completely different varieties of Galapagos finches, and also recorded major differences from island to island.
Finches had probably been blown there from South America long ago and became isolated not only from the original continent, but also from island to island, with very little communication. Consequently they divided and subdivided into many subspecies and eventually some completely different species over long periods of time.
Once they develop so many new variations that they can no longer mate with the original species, that’s when a separate species has evolved. That’s actually the definition of a new species.
This was an epiphany for Darwin because here was evidence of the universal process of Natural Selection right in front of his eyes that had not been previously recognized by natural science. Nature always selects the best – survival of the fittest – greatest chance of offspring. In the years that followed, Darwin applied this same principle to every species on earth, and found that these evolutionary patterns were universal.
In his original book, Darwin always referred to Natural Selection as a theory. For over two decades he was very trepidatious about publishing his discoveries until he had amassed voluminous supporting evidence. His work was the very epitome of the Scientific Method – a criterion no longer required by much of today’s “science” – like COVID “science,” climate “science,” gender “science,” and other signs of academic deterioration. Because Darwin still lived in the era of legitimate science.
Darwin just didn’t want to take any chances of sharing Galileo’s fate – house arrest for life for discovering the earth went around the sun.
Actually Darwin might never have published the book at all were it not for his meeting with one of the foremost scientists of his day – Alfred Russell Wallace – some 20 years after his voyage to the Galapagos. By coincidence, Russell had reached the exact same conclusions about Evolution as Darwin, but by a completely different pathway – a separate and distinct body of evidence.
And that’s when Darwin knew that he had to publish, once he had made that professional connection.
Not only was Wallace 100% supportive of the Darwin’s work, but every legitimate scientist in Europe soon agreed with Darwin’s discoveries. Many became lifelong colleagues. And this agreement among scientists has continued to the present time.
All dissenters soon fade.
So again, when Darwin first returned to England from the voyage, he began writing the first edition of
On the Origin of the Species. Although the book was completed in a few years, Darwin did not publish the book until 1859 – some 25 years later. Why not? Why was Darwin afraid to share his breakthrough scientific knowledge? Politics. And religion.
In Darwin’s England the prevailing religion was housed in the Church of England. In the 1850s, religious freedom hadn’t quite come into vogue yet. Remember, the Church of England was invented by Henry VIII back in the 16th century in response to the Pope’s refusal to allow Henry to take a Charlie Sheen approach to marriage and divorce.
And although they were long past the phase of lopping off heads for disagreeing with the King, as Miss Boleyn had discovered, nevertheless that one religion still pervaded British politics, academics, and science. This would account for Darwin’s 25-year delay in publishing his work.
One indisputable consequence of Natural Selection as a universal phenomenon was that Man and chimpanzees had a common ancestor. Of course modern DNA studies and anthropology have now proven this beyond the shadow of a doubt. But in mid 19th century England it upset some applecarts.
Even though Darwin’s book never actually made the claim that Man was descended from the ape, the implications were unavoidable: if Natural Selection truly were a universal principle, then it would necessarily follow that Man and chimpanzees shared a common ancestor during the four million years of prehominids prior to
homo sapiens. [3,4] But that’s categorically different from Man descending from the ape.
But that’s what Darwin was accused of. Junk science tabloids would make cartoons about Darwin’s “claim” that Man had descended from the Ape. Which only confirmed that these writers had never read his book – same as the general public – like most folks who get all their information from CNN headlines and the fake news media of the day. That’s always much easier than doing the little bit of reading and study necessary to get a basic notion of what Evolution and Natural Selection actually were.
These cartoons lasted for 100 years – always always among the uneducated. Like pop media.
As a brand new and controversial principle about the nature of Nature, Darwin’s discovery of Natural Selection has been verified as fact by every legitimate scientist since that time, even up to the present. He permanently changed the direction of natural science. Which is why he is buried today in Westminster Abbey, along with Newton, Dickens, Elizabeth I, Chaucer, Handel, and some 3000 top influencers of western civilization.
Natural Selection and Evolution are not theories – they are scientific fact. For the past century they have been thoroughly supported by the associated sciences: zoology, paleo-anthropology, osteology, and of course modern DNA science. Truly regrettable that Darwin wasn’t around for the OJ trial.
The only real opposition to Evolution comes from a few radical religious cultists with no science background – usually the same people who still believe the earth is only 6000 years old. Even most religious people realize today that Evolution presents no conflict with religious beliefs. Which is why decades ago both the Catholic Church and the Church of England accepted Evolution as proven natural science, and not as an obstacle to Faith.
There is a scene in
Master and Commander that elegantly resolves any imagined conflict between Evolution and religion. The ship’s doctor is explaining to a young sailor how animals and plants change and adapt over time, and why Galapagos life forms are so different from anywhere else. The young man thinks for a minute and then asks: “Does God make them change?” To which the naturalist replies “Yes, God makes them change.”
Guess that works for everybody. Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, even us lapsed agnostics. Everybody’s covered.
There are so many dozens of incontrovertible proofs for the evolutionary model – take osteology and DNA as just two examples:
In the last 80 years Paleoanthropology has discovered hundreds of skeletal remains of prehominids from several million years ago –
homo habilis,
homo erectus, Australopithecus, Neanderthal, Cro-Magnon, etc. – all those players who preceded
homo sapiens.
Experts have reconstructed some fairly accurate models of their skeletons which you can see in some of the best museums in Europe and elsewhere. Comparing those with fossils of other prehistoric and modern mammals and primates, including apes, the similarities are as plain as the nose on your face. [4,5]
DNA. Man has 98.5% identical DNA with the chimpanzee. That is incontrovertible scientific fact. Now this doesn’t mean that man is descended from chimpanzees – no matter what you might see on Capitol Hill these days. Nor does it mean that someday a chimp is going to sit down at the keyboard and type out the King James Bible. But it is hard evidence of a common ancestor that took place during the misty 4 million year prehominid evolutionary period. [4,5]
This has been the briefest look at one of the most profound discoveries in human history. Most of the important science and historical facts were left out, but this is a faithful summary of the relevant premises.
