3. CURE FOR ESOPHAGEAL REFLUX - 44% OF THE POPULATION
Can't really blame it on the holidays - this epidemic is with us all year long. National Institutes of Health figures cite as high as 44% of the US population affected.
While NIH has about as much credibility as CDC for inventing epidemiological statistics out of thin air, it doesn't take much imagination to see GERD as a disease endemic to the American lifestyle. It's everywhere.
Do you get that burning in the chest at night? Do you wake up choking?
In the
Enzymes chapter, we go into the physiological deconstruction of the disease, in a fair of amount of detail. Processed food by definition has no enzymes - it cannot then be well metabolized and absorbed as nutrition, or passed along through the tract.
The result is not just blockage but putrefaction and absorption, as the foreign, manmade sludge triggers the immune response.
The chronic situation that ensues typically involves the gut mucosa, from the esophagus all the way on down. Chronic inflammation, coupled with digestive enzyme depletion - all this brings on pain.
The acidic medium irritates the already inflamed cells lining the gut. After years of eating hydrogenated processed foods, normal digestion has long become a distant memory.
The pain is commonly described as a burning. Usually it begins as a transient localized stab. But as the condition becomes better established, the burning sensation can become prolonged and extend all the way from the back of the throat down into the stomach.
How bad can it get? Depends on the IQ of the owner. And how willing he is to adjust lifestyle to avoid symptoms. In this case, symptoms have a direct bearing on the progression of the condition - the more pain, the greater the irritation and edema surrounding the epithelial cells of the gut lining.
If diet excesses persist, inflammation can introduce fibrosis, scarring, and eventually metaplasia. Esophageal cancer has been one of our most common cancers for decades. Certainly no mystery about causation here.
The sequence above is the most typical pathway. But the body is talking to the individual all the time, sending frequent then constant pain messages that say, hey! stop shoving all that trash down the hatch. I can't deal with it.
Often an incident will send the patient running to the emergency room for an upper GI and a scrip for industrial strength Prilosec. Or any of the other proton pump inhibitors, like Nexium, Prevacid, etc.
Drugs have a very low track record for curing reflux - they make a temporary condition permanent. Mainly because they pretend that temporarily relieving the pain by stomach acid suppression will solve the problem. Which of course it doesn't, because the problem wasn't pain - it was blockage from indigestion.
Here is a whole category of unnecessary disease-promoting drugs. Their sole stated purpose: inhibiting production of digestive fluids. Why on earth would you want to do that?
Only one possibility: drug sales.
Whatever happened to Hippocrates and
primum non nocere? The only thing medicine takes care not to harm is their bottom line.
This is not even mentioning side effects. From the

Wait a minute: reflux as a side effect? Thought that's what the drug was for...?
All these risks just because we're too lazy to correct our diet and stop eating trash? Wow.
Drugs stop pain by stopping digestion. Inhibiting digestion compounds the blockage. But all too often, the forces of Domino's and Cinnabun and Pieology and Taco Bell and Burger King and Pepsi and Doritos, etc. will prevail.
And acute esophagitis frequently evolves to the pre-cancerous Barrett's Syndrome after a few years.
So much for the deterioration of all things. But there's actually some good news - an escape from the downward spiral. The cure is very easy to understand, perhaps a little less so to accomplish.
It involves just 3 steps:
- hydration
- enzymes
- clean diet
Most people are
dehydrated. Working your way up to 8 glasses per day takes a conscious effort. Many are starting at zero. Ice doesn't count.
Just keep in mind the simple hydraulics of it all - you're trying to clear out impacted sludge that has been dried out and hammered into place in your gut for months or longer. So at the very least it needs enough water to begin the flushing. 8 glasses. See

Been using Tums, Prilosec or Nexium for years? That's just what they want. How's that working out so far? Chronic disease spells chronic drug sales.

With perfect compliance, it rarely takes this simple program more than a very few weeks to resolve even the most persistent cases of reflux.
People will do anything to continue eating their comfort foods. They pretend that taking these harmful drugs will allow them to continue to eat the same sludge, and everything will be fine. Organized medicine does everything possible to reinforce that delusion.

4. CHIROPRACTIC CONTINUING ED:
THE RECURRING THREAT OF PACE
It's back. For the third time in 10 years, DC continuing education in CA is being threatened by the looming risks of an organization known as PACE.
The state board is yet again considering letting this organization assume complete control of continuing education. From past newsletters, here is a summary of some of the problems such a transition would bring:
Speaking with some of PACE's current clients back East, I learned a few things. After seven years, PACE is active in 24 states. Is it really true that in that time they have only approved a total of 27 providers? Less than 2 per state!
We currently have about 175 providers in CA. So we're going to lose all but 2, if we're like other states. How will PACE benefit?
PACE is certainly motivated by profit to take over here in CA.
It costs $2000 to apply. They have an extremely high rejection rate for provider applicants. If PACE rejects all but two applications, that would certainly explain their $1500 "appeal fee" after they reject you, which is listed very prominently at the very beginning of their marketing package.
I guess since they're not going to be receiving the $2000 annual fee from 99% of their applicants, this is their only chance to collect from them. We can see pretty clearly what percentage of applicants are accepted. So most of California's 175 providers would pay $3500 to be rejected? The motivation is obvious.
I guess it's fairly safe to say that PACE is not exactly the champion of academic freedom.
Who are the members of PACE's secret "approval committee"? What are their academic and education credentials? Are they licensed DCs? Do they know anything about chiropractic? What are the criteria for this approval process? Why are there so few applicants who have passed muster in all these years?
If PACE is voted in, here are some of the likely consequences :
- seminar fees will likely double
- the catalogue of available course content will be reduced as much as 90%
- instructors in the new system need not have any experience or credentials whatsoever in education
If only one state association were approved in CA, do we presume that anyone who joins them would automatically be eligible to as a seminar provider, under their auspices? No teaching experience, no academic credentials, no standards of seminar content - nothing.
These providers would then be accredited, and most of the experienced lecturers who have been providing sound academic coursework for DCs, perhaps for the past 3 decades, might be thrown out.
Whenever something this radical and expansive is suggested, one universal principle immediately emerges:
cui bono? Who benefits? What's the angle?
With the potential of hundreds of thousands of new dollars annually changing hands because of the proposed new system, there's certainly a lot of room for motivation along the food chain.
That aspect should be carefully evaluated and brought to light, in all its permutations.
Doesn't it seem odd that we would suddenly vote to outsource a service that is already being met perfectly well in-house, and by doing so forego all the fees collected, money which is needed to run the present BCE?
But more fundamentally, do we really need yet another ponderous, wasteful bureaucracy in this most regulated state in the Union, to impose some unstated agenda, in order to solve a nonexistent problem and further oppress DCs in this state?
This is the question that needs an unequivocal answer.
The point here is we don't need any change at all. At present the board has not provided any clear evidence that the present system is in need of repair. It's all anecdotal and rhetorical.
The present system didn't just haphazardly happen. We went through 2 years of intense study and evaluation only 4 years ago when the previous system was thrown out, in favor of the current one. Remember?
So now we're going to throw out all that work and effort? Already?
How about instead we take all the energy that people seem willing to invest into this non-issue and channel it in areas that will prop up, improve and enliven our much-beleaguered profession.
Why do most Boards think that their legacy must be in inventing ever more and more new rules and regulations, instead of evaluating and streamlining what is already in place, and facilitating its inherent efficiency? Change for the sake of change.
How about a rule that builds up the profession for once, instead of further dragging it down?
At this time nothing is written in stone. The board is supposedly looking for feedback at this time. so if you are reasonably happy with the CE system as it is now, let them know.
Just a short note from enough people may be enough to get them to think carefully before jumping off the deep end again.

5. VACCINE REFERENDUM -
IS IT REALLY OVER?
If you followed the Referendum to repeal SB277 a few months ago, you're probably done with politics for awhile. The Referendum "effort" didn't just fail - it was badly mishandled and misrepresented from beginning to end.
All that is water under the bridge. So what are informed parents to do now? Well, guess we'll just have to vaccinate our kids, and trust the pharmaceutical industry and their billion dollar lobby machine to guard their immune systems. And accept why US kids are the sickest of any industrialized nation. No way to get an exemption as of July 2016. Nothing else to do, right?
That's what I thought. Until I found out about VOTE. It's a big picture idea which wants to streamline the whole idea of the requirements for Referendum and make it much easier, without the restrictive time limits, and going door to door.
Even with all the restrictions and mismanagement, the SB277 Referendum almost made it - we almost got the 360,000 signatures necessary to get the thing on the ballot.
The idea of VOTE isn't just about the vaccine issue. It proposes a fundamental change to the entire Referendum process in California. It would allow for repeal of laws, removal of legislators from office, virtually any legislative changes to be introduced by a popular voice - the closest thing to a true democracy that's ever been suggested.
Sound a little far-fetched? That's what I thought till I looked it over. Here's the link: please give it a few moments -- I think this could really work. Not just for vaccine common sense.

6. WHY I SHOULD BE PRESIDENT
The last several presidents have proven pretty conclusively that one really needs no qualifications to sit in the White House. Let's be realistic - the president hasn't run this country since the 50s.
The US is run by multinational corporations. Modern presidents mainly just go to banquets and PR spots, and recite the phrases taught them by their staff. Anyone showing signs of actual leadership is shot at.
In this next election there is really only one issue: whether or not to close the door, if that's even still an option. All other issues are peripheral to this one.

7. IN REVIEW:
THE 60 DAY PROGRAM
