Welcome to our First Issue!
We are celebrating the start of the new year and UNCG's commitment to building healthy lives and vibrant communities. The UNCG Institute for Community & Economic Engagement is excited to launch our inaugural e-newsletter. As part of ICEE's mission to serve as a portal to UNCG resources, events, and community networks, we curate resources and information from both on- and off-campus to support community engagement and public service activities on behalf of UNCG's faculty, staff, and students. This newsletter will complement our newly renovated and continually updated website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed. Connect with us!
We have signed you up for this monthly newsletter with the hope that you will find great value in its content. If you ever find that what this e-newsletter offers is not for you, simply click "unsubscribe" at the bottom of our emails. We want this newsletter to be valuable for you so please share your feedback and suggestions to help us improve.
If you are a dean, department chair, or director, we have added you to this listserv in an effort to keep you up to date on UNCG's accomplishments and initiatives related to community engagement. Please consider sharing this newsletter with your faculty and staff and encourage them to subscribe, as this newsletter will routinely include funding and conference RFPs.
We encourage you to share relevant resources with us, so we may include them in our various communication efforts. If you would like your events, programs, offices, or partnership opportunities to be included, please contact us!
With excitement,
Emily Janke, PhD Kristin Medlin, MPA
Director Communications & Partnerships Manager

We are excited to announce that UNCG has been re-classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a 2015 Community-Engaged Institution. One of only 157 re-classified American universities and colleges, UNCG's application demonstrated how community engagement is an active strategy throughout UNCG's curricular and co-curricular activities, strategic plan, diversity and inclusion initiatives, student success and retention initiatives, and quality enhancement plan (among others). The partnerships profiled in UNCG's application included activities from across all of UNCG's Schools and Colleges, and reflected the deep commitment of faculty, staff, and students to our local communities. |

The honor represents the highest federal recognition a school can receive for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement. Between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014, 11,549 students completed 812,581 hours of service!

Immigrants/Refugees Start Businesses with Help of Loan Program
Hosted by the Center for New North Carolinians and the North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center, the MERIT program provides assistance in developing capital resources and establishing, or repairing, a credit history. It targets refugees with entrepreneurial skills who lack access to funding from the mainstream financial institutions because they lack a credit history. With these grants, recipients establish a credit record as they repay their loans.

Monday, January 26, 2015 :: 4:00pm :: Virginia Dare Room, Alumni
House
When you picture a leader, what do you imagine? Strength? Power? Task Master? You certainly wouldn't imagine someone that's vulnerable, in-tune to feelings or highly self-aware would you? That garbage is reserved for therapists and social workers right? Don't you think its's best to leave the personal stuff at home? Well...The innovation work we do at SEEK helps people by shifting them away from business connections to a Human to Human one-using a series of techniques aiming to strengthen our natural empathetic response. In this workshop, Greg Hewitt, SEEK Director of Innovation, will lead an exploration of what empathy is, how it works and why an empathetic leader is more effective.
