One of the things we’ve been hearing from people who binged
Unorthodox is that they loved watching a show in Yiddish. In case you’ve finished binging and are in search of more Yiddish on screen, here are our recommendations:

Menashe tells the intimate story of a father trying to provide for his son. It was shot, primarily in secret, within in a Hasidic enclave in Boro Park, Brooklyn. The filmmaker, Joshua Z. Weinstein, based the story on the actor’s own experience. While he shot the whole film in Yiddish, Weinstein doesn’t speak the language – he wrote the script in English and received live-translation to English through an earpiece during the shoot. Production for Season 3 of
Shtisel may have been delayed because of Covid-19, but now that we know it’s coming, it’s time to catch up on the first two seasons. We first brought
Shtisel to Boston as part of the 2016 Boston Jewish Film Festival, and since landing on Netflix last year, the whole world has been following the Shtisel family. The show takes place in an Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem and stars Shira Haas (who plays Esty in
Unorthodox). Click HERE to watch.

Unlike our other picks,
Felix and Meira isn’t set in Israel or Brooklyn. Instead, it brings us to the Hasidic community in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood, where Meira (Hadas Yaron, another
Shtisel cast-member), a Hasidic woman, begins a relationship with Felix, a man from outside her community. Click HERE to watch.

We see Mile End, and we think bagels. So, while everyone on the internet seems to be making sourdough bread, we want to try our hand at these famous Montreal style bagels. |

In 2018, Boston Jewish Film Festival brought Eli Batalion to Boston to talk about
The Double Date, starring Mayim Bialik*
(The Big Bang Theory). This hilarious short is just one episode of
YidLife Crisis, an entire Yiddish web series written by, and starring, Eli Batalion and Jamie Elman. Watch the whole series HERE.
*Did you know? Mayim Bialik’s great-great-grandfather's uncle was the great Hebrew and Yiddish poet Hayim Nahman Bialik. For more on Yiddish poets read on...

What Potion Should I Give the Night So She’ll Always Wonder
By Abraham Sutzkever / Translated by Zackary Sholem Berger
What potion should I give the night so she’ll always wonder?
Her pounding heart’s a rider galloping from the burning wood.
Maybe my pharmacist is awake the next street over?
In a crucible of bone, snake tears mixed with herbs.
Should I hurry? Call the doctor? A heart like hers is rare.
And to tell the truth, if it shattered, what would I do?

Soul Witness Screening & Director Talk
Monday, May 11 at 7:00 PM
Join the Vilna and Producer/Director Harvey Bravman for an online, behind-the-scenes discussion of the film
Soul Witness.
Soul Witness is a documentary film based on more than 80 hours of Holocaust testimonies conducted 30 years ago by Holocaust testimony expert, Lawrence Langer. The interview tapes sat in a metal closet for decades before being rescued for the making of this film. Survivors describe their lives before the war, growing intolerance; their lives during the war, and the effect their experiences still had on them at the time of the interviews. Some witnesses survived death camps, some hid, others fought in resistance movements and many saved the lives of others. Register here! |
