College applications released August 1
And so it begins! On August 1, the majority of online college applications go live. Set a meeting with your GE counselor to create accounts and explore the Common Application (used by 500+ colleges and universities), UC Application, and plenty others -- what information do you need to start collecting? What is the format for the description of your extracurricular
activities? What supplemental essays does each school require? (NOTE: Do not create an account on these websites before August 1...at best, you will be applying for the wrong term, and at worst, any information you've entered will be wiped clean!)
Also, don't forget to pick up a copy of your transcript from your high school and confirm its accuracy; if you wait too long, any errors that exist may not be corrected before application deadlines come and go.
Take advantage of your free time this summer and get a head start on filling out these applications and brainstorming, outlining, and writing your essays. Trust us, there's a lot more work involved in this process than you expect -- no matter how much you expect there to be! The best way to tackle the process is to start early and stay organized.

Want to maximize standardized test preparation while minimizing cost? Learn more about the group tutoring option!
We often get asked why we don’t offer larger courses in a classroom setting, and the answer is simple: it isn’t as effective. Our group sessions max out at 5 students, which allows the tutor to give each student individual attention (while still keeping prices low) — a feat that is nearly impossible in classrooms with 20-30 students present. Even better, our group sessions are cheaper than the competition’s large classes; since sessions are held in clients’ homes, there is no overhead for reserving classrooms on school or library campuses!
Additionally, clients arrange their own groups and are able to schedule sessions at times that are convenient for everyone, which means that students work alongside friends and/or classmates and can select session dates/times that work with their hectic schedules.
So Great Expectations College Prep offers two types of tutoring: private and group. But which to choose?
While the group option is ideal in a lot of situations, it is perhaps most effective in helping students determine which test — the SAT or ACT — they are best suited for. Students are introduced to the basic rules, strategies, and concepts of both exams and can explore how each fits their individual strengths and weaknesses. Taking both tests without any introduction/preparation to determine which is the better fit yields few, if any, answers; for instance, a lot of students bomb the ACT when they take it blind and therefore decide to focus on the SAT, when, in reality, if they had done even a few hours of
introductory prep for the ACT, they would’ve known what to expect and done far better. Investigating both options helps ensure that students make informed decisions about which test to really focus their time on.
Of course, private tutoring allows a student to jump right into a personalized curriculum in which the tutor focuses on the his/her respective strengths and weaknesses. Our tutors will help students explore a variety of strategic options for a particular problem type, working to determine which functions best for them. The one-on-one environment ensures that tutors can spend time however the student wants without having to cater to the needs of other students.
A lot of our clients choose a combination of the two options: they start with group tutoring to cover the fundamentals at a lower cost, then they move into private tutoring to get the vital one-on-one guidance/assistance.
