Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most beloved stories in musical theatre. Although the musical premiered in 1964, it is as timely today as it has ever been. The village of Anatevka is populated by devout, hard-working, and complex people clinging to the traditions they grew up with. They struggle against poverty and the incoming threats from the Russian government, yet always find ways to celebrate life.
This production will be very actor-focused, with characters portrayed realistically and naturalistically, revealing the nuances that drive their decisions. The staging will be minimal, reflecting the poverty of Anatevka. We will find moments of genuine emotion as Tevye’s family braces against the turbulence of change. In the end, this is a story of a family – and an entire community – forced away from everything they’ve ever known – something that is truly heartbreaking and very relevant today.
While sets will be more minimal and the village’s poverty pronounced, we intend this to be a unique and extremely high quality production, including a 25-piece orchestra and state-of-the-art sound and lighting design.

Tevye - One of musical theatre’s most iconic patriarchs; a likable, hard-working, pious dairyman who strives to improve the lives of his five daughters. Raised according to the old scriptures, he struggles to maintain religious traditions in a rapidly changing world. He’s a Dad whose deep love for his daughters is often the reason for his need to adjust to change--only to find he can only bend so far before he breaks.
