US Investigating 'Viral' Attack as Possible Source of Diplomats' Illness in Cuba |
|
|
|
US investigators are looking at a range of theories - including the possibility of a "viral" attack - to explain what may have sickened some American diplomats stationed in Havana, according to the state department.
US experts have yet to determine who or what was behind the mysterious illnesses that began occurring in late 2016 and heightened tensions between Cuba and the US. They have seen no evidence it was "an episode of mass hysteria" among the 24 affected US personnel and family members, a senior state department medical officer told a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

Colombian-born soccer star Yerry Mina is making a change from Palmeiras, accepting a five-and-a-half-year contract to join the illustrious ranks of FC Barcelona for the sum of euros 11.8 million (US$14.2 million). With a release clause amounting to euro100 million (US$120.3 million) paid to the athlete's former team, Brazil's Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, Mina will bolster Barcelona's defense. The center-back has proved himself a strong asset to his former team, supporting them to triumph as league title-winner in 2016 and scoring a total of nine goals during the team's 49 matches. "Yerry Mina now comes to Barça with the opportunity to continue developing as a footballer following his move to Europe," declares a glowing statement on the FC Barcelona website. "Without a doubt, the Colombian has the potential to make it." |

Jorge Sampaoli was at the facilities of FC Barcelona last Tuesday, in the Sports City of Sant Joan Despí, following the training of Barcelona's first squad and taking the opportunity to talk with his players Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano, as well as Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde. For Messi, it will not be the first time he plays with Argentina against Spain and his Barcelona teammates. The most recent was played shortly after 'La Roja', Spain's national team, was World Champion in South Africa. |

Joseph Blatter Against Use of VAR at Russia 2018. Former FIFA President Joseph Blatter has spoken out against using video evidence at Russia 2018 World Cup as teething problems continue to trail trials in countries such as Germany. 'You cannot use the World Cup as a guinea pig for such a serious intervention in the game,'' Blatter said in an interview with Wednesday's Sport Bild magazine. Blatter, 81, was banned from football for eight years in 2015 by the FIFA ethics committee over a 'disloyal payment' of 2 million Swiss francs (2.07 million dollars). The payment was made to former European football chief Michel Platini. The FIFA appeals committee later reduced the suspension to six years, while Platini is serving a four-year ban. Blatter's administration was skeptical of technological innovations during his 17 years as president of the world governing body. |

Golden Globes 2018: Sexual harassment scandal dominates ceremony. Powerful speeches about Hollywood's sexual abuse scandal have dominated the 75th Golden Globe Awards. It was the first major Hollywood awards ceremony since the film industry was hit by sexual harassment scandals, with stars wearing black to honour victims. Oprah Winfrey summed up the mood, saying "a new day is on the horizon" as she collected an honorary award. The big film winner of the night was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which took home four awards. It won the best film drama award, with its star Frances McDormand also picking up a trophy for best actress. The Oscar-winning actress stars as a grieving mother who challenges police over the fact her daughter's killer has not been found. Big Little Lies won the most awards in the television categories, including honours for its stars Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard. It was also named best limited TV series. The Golden Globes are organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are seen as an indicator of which films are likely to do well at the Oscars, which take place on 4 March. |

The Louvre Museum, one of the most important in France and in the world, received 8.1 million visitors in 2017, an increase of 10.1 percent compared to 2016, according to official figures released today. According to the balance, last year the emblematic institution managed to recover after 2016 when it suffered an abrupt fall, related to the decline of tourism in the country because of the terrorist threat. In 2016, the museum only received 7.4 million visitors, which meant a decrease of 13 percent compared to 2015. In the calendar that just ended, the Louvre again surpassed the threshold of eight million visitors, of which 70 percent corresponded to foreign tourists. The main markets were the United States (15 percent of foreigners), China (9 percent), the United Kingdom (4 percent) and Germany (3.5 percent). With a vast collection of some 300,000 works ranging from antiquity to the nineteenth century, the Louvre is considered the most visited museum in the world. |
