Shakira's Colombian birth city unveils towering statue in Singer's honor. 'Hips that do not lie, a unique talent, a voice that moves masses,' reads the inscription on the 6.5-metre statue. Colombian superstar Shakira's Caribbean home city of Barranquilla has unveiled a 6.5-meter (21.3-foot) hip-swaying statue in her honor. The towering bronze and aluminum creation depicts the singer in a bikini top, bare middle, and a long, flowing skirt, her hands clasped over her head and one hip jutting out in one of her characteristic dance moves. "Hips that do not lie, a unique talent, a voice that moves masses," reads the inscription at the base of the sculpture unveiled on the banks of the Magdalena River at a ceremony on Tuesday, attended by Shakira's parents William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll. Hips Don't Lie is the title of one of 46-year-old Shakira's award-winning songs. On X, formerly Twitter, the singer thanked sculptor Yino Marquez and his art student collaborators for "this example of the enormous artistic talent of the people of my country".

Rafael Nadal squanders three match points in Brisbane International defeat against Jordan Thompson. Rafael Nadal's first singles competition since returning from injury ended in a riveting quarterfinal defeat against Australian Jordan Thompson at the Brisbane International on Friday. The Spaniard, playing in his first singles event in almost a year, won the first set and had three match points in the second before Thompson mounted an impressive comeback, eventually triumphing 5-7 7-6 6-3 in a tight encounter. The match lasted close to three-and-a-half hours and it was almost midnight in Brisbane when Thompson won an epic 33-shot rally - the longest of the match - to complete a thrilling victory, much to the delight of the home fans who had stayed late into the evening. Nadal, who struggled with injuries throughout 2023 and spent several months of the year recovering from hip surgery, took a medical timeout in the third set but returned to the court to finish the match. He will now face Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals of the Brisbane International on Saturday, and the winner of that match will face either Holger Rune or Roman Safiullin in the final.

Kylian Mbappé undecided on future as contract winds down. Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé said he has not made up his mind about where he will play next season as his contract enters its final six months. Mbappé said last year he would not renew his contract at PSG, which expires at the end of the 2023-24 season when he could leave Paris for free. The France captain, who has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid, is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club. "First of all, I'm very, very, very motivated for this year. It's very important," Mbappé told reporters after PSG's 2-0 win over Toulouse in the French Super Cup final on Wednesday. "As I said, we've got titles to go after and we've already won one, so that's already done. After that, no, I haven't made up my mind yet. "But in any case, with the agreement I made with the chairman (Nasser Al-Khelaifi) this summer, it doesn't matter what I decide. "We managed to protect all parties and preserve the club's serenity for the challenges ahead, which remains the most important thing. So, we'll say it's secondary." Media reports in September said Mbappé had agreed to forego loyalty bonuses worth up to 100 million euros ($109.45 million) if he left PSG on a free transfer.

Former German footballer Franz Beckenbauer's health is deteriorating. Former German football icon Franz Beckenbauer is in poor health, according to statements by his brother Walter that were published by local media on Sunday. Walter Beckenbauer said that his brother was not feeling well; if he said that his brother was okay, he would be lying, which confirms that the health of the legend of German football is not improving. Franz Beckenbauer has not been seen in public for a long time and could not even attend the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022. "The Kaiser (emperor in German)," as the 78-year-old former football player is known, explained at the time that he could not attend the World Cup because he had suffered an "infarction in his right eye," after which he could not see and also had to take care of his heart. Beckenbauer, who won the 1974 World Cup as a player and the 1990 World Cup as a coach, spent most of his career with the Bayern Munich club. He retired from public life and now lives in Austria.
