Are you ever asking yourself if coffee is good for you?
What better wake up call for myself than smelling coffee in the morning?
As you likely know, tea has been a darling of the health world and coffee has had a bad reputation when it comes to heart health. Science has now become more bullish on java. The coffee bean has caught up with the tea leaf and some experts believe it has even surpassed it.
Myth: Coffee is bad for your heart.
Fact: As far as the cardiovascular system is concerned, many researchers think that coffee is actually harmless.
What to Do: Drinking a cup or two a day is OK, preferably in the morning. Don’t sip throughout the day though to avoid possible stimulating effects. Be sure to skip the sugar or artificial sweetener.

Today, heart disease and stroke take one life every 7 minutes and 90% of Canadians have at least one risk factor. Heart Month is the Heart and Stroke Foundation's key opportunity to reach millions of Canadians in February and alert them to the risks of heart disease and stroke. Volunteers are the face and the voice of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Heart Month is a critical time when we depend on you to share our message.

Light and Healthy Breakfast
|
|
|
- 2 cups (500 mL) rolled oats
- 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) buttermilk, divided
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) whole wheat flour or oat flour
- 1 tsp (5 mL) baking powder
- 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
- 1/4 tsp (1 mL) cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup (50 mL) canola oil
- 1 tbsp (15 mL) honey or maple syrup
- canola oil cooking spray or extra canola oil for cooking
Directions
- In large bowl, stir together oats and 2 cups (500 mL) buttermilk. Set aside for an hour or until buttermilk is absorbed and oats are soft. (To do this ahead of time, cover and refrigerate overnight.)
- In small bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Add to softened oatmeal.
- Add remaining 1/2 cup (125 mL) buttermilk along with eggs, canola oil, honey or maple syrup. Stir with rubber spatula just until well combined.
- Heat large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat and spray with canola oil cooking spray or brush with canola oil.
- Cook about 1/2 cup (125 mL) batter at a time; spread it out with bottom of ladle or spoon (it will be thick) to about 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. Turn heat down to medium-low and cook until edges appear dry and bubbles begin to break on surface. Using thin spatula, flip and cook until golden on other side.
- Repeat with remaining batter. If you like, keep cooked pancakes warm in 200 ˚F (100 ˚C) oven while cooking the rest.

Answers
- False (a heart that is bigger than it should be is called an enlarged heart. It's weak and holds fluids, causing it to beat irregulally and making the lungs congested.)
- Really hurt (a stressful event, like a breakup or winning the lottery, can bring on sudden chest pains that feel like a heart attack. Those pains are triggered by a rush of stress hormones. The good news is that "broken heart syndrome" is treatable and goes away within a couple of weeks.)
- Centre ( Your heart is in the centre between your lungs.)
- 2,000 ( each day! It is a strong muscle that pumps blood to all organs in your body.)
- Ape ( are closest to humans. Their hearts are simular in how they look and work. )
