Music was of great importance to the Celts because they believed it had the power to enchant, magically summoning emotion to take the listener into a place of dream and vision or bring soothing forgetfulness. It was an integral part of the Otherworld. [

Co-presented with Community Music School of Santa Cruz, these three musicians have a singular sound, a playful yet accomplished interplay that seems to defy the laws of physics, an intensity with a great sense of humor, and modernity rooted in tradition. Väsen, a Swedish acoustic trio, now in its 27th year of touring together.
The parts: a five-string viola of sophisticated symphonic taste, an adventurous 12-string guitar, and a nyckelharpa (a “keyed fiddle”) deeply rooted in the traditions of Swedish folk music. All three are instrumental virtuosos in their own right, and together they form a unique supernatural being. To experience Väsen is to witness ensemble playing at its finest. .

Alan Reid was a vital member of Scotland’s legendary folk group Battlefield Band for 40 years. From beautiful ballads to a musical cycle on the life and times of Scots born sailor John Paul Jones, Alan has forged a reputation for composing songs with beguiling melodies and strong historical content.
Rob van Sante's first love has always been the guitar. Acknowledged for his subtle accompaniments and fine harmony singing, Rob is also a noted producer, recording engineer, and session musician. Outside of the duo work he records and plays with veteran singer and songwriter John Conolly, writer of classic folk standard ‘Fiddlers’ Green’ and also with U.S. songwriter Janie Meneely.
