Greetings!
According to Punxsutawney Phil, Pennsylvania's famous resident groundhog, we're in for an early spring!
The Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay is excited to welcome plenty of live music this spring thanks to our energetic new Music Director, Jacqueline Pierce.
Jacqueline Pierce, second from left with Banish Misfortune bandmates Chris Beem, David Molk, and Rebecca Bruemmer
Jackie Pierce has assumed the role of concert director for the Monterey Bay Celtic Society and is now busy booking the fantastic groups we are proud to present. You may already know Jackie as the concert host at St. Mary’s By-The-Sea in Pacific Grove, where she has been presenting fabulous shows for over 10 years. St. Mary’s is part of our music family here at the Celtic Society and recognizes our membership discounts and utilizes our website and social media for ticket sales and concert promotion. Jackie is a retired trial lawyer and mediator, a co-host of St. Mary’s weekly jam led by Fiddler John Weed (Molly’s Revenge, New World String Project), and a frequent session player at Rosie McCann's Irish Pub in downtown Santa Cruz on first and third Thursdays and Steel Bonnet Brewing on first and third Mondays in Scotts Valley. She also plays with “Banish Misfortune,” a lively Celtic band often spotted at O’Callaghan’s Irish Pub in Carmel. She also serves on the board of the Scottish Fiddlers of California. Jackie says she “caught the bug” at an Alasdair Fraser concert many years ago, which led her to travels in Scotland and Ireland. She is looking forward to another musical adventure in Ireland this May! For booking information, call or text 831-224-3819, or make contact through the society’s website.
Sláinte!

The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell, or piece of mischief, and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship.
Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar, and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. After 25 years of touring, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer. Dan Houghton, Jon Bews, Alasdair White, and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches’ cauldron, slowly coalescing into chaotic order.
"Their music comes from wild landscapes and wild places of the spirit." — The Orcadian

Don't miss this dynamic romp complete with Celtic tunes, American song, and Irish dancing. There will be plenty of fast jigs and reels to get you in the mood for the season of green, and St. Mary's bistro will be up and running with seasonal treats, tatties with toppings, and Guinness! Doors open at 2:30 p.m. with appearances by The McMonarchs (St. Mary's Teen Band) and Banish Misfortune (familiar faces you will recognize) to get you in the proper celebratory frame of mind!
Then, join father/son duo John and Tyler Weed with Stuart Mason for an afternoon of Celtic music, Irish dancing, and American song. This year’s Party for Paddy will feature the dancing of world champion Pacific Northwest step wizard Marisa Gilman. As is tradition, Mason and The Weeds will embark on a journey across the Atlantic, tracing the music of the Emerald Isles to one of many landing spots in the United States. Watch the folk process unfold as John Weed and “Uncle” Stuart Mason, two members of West Coast Celtic powerhouse Molly’s Revenge and Nordic band New World String Project, pass this musical lineage to West Coast banjo, mandolin, and fiddle ace Tyler Weed. The event will feature compositions on tenor banjo from Tyler, a fresh up and comer on the folk trad West Coast scene.

Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts, Lúnasa is indeed a gathering of some of the top musical talents in Ireland. Its members have helped form the backbone of some of the greatest Irish groups of the decade. Bassist Trevor Hutchinson was a key member of The Waterboys, and later he, with guitarist Donogh Hennessy, would form the dynamic rhythm section of The Sharon Shannon Band. Ed Boyd (Flook, Michael McGoldrick Band) has recently replaced Hennessy. Fiddler Sean Smyth is an All-Ireland champion who has played with Donal Lunny's Coolfin. Kevin Crawford, considered to be among the finest flutists in Ireland, played with the acclaimed traditional group Moving Cloud. Piper Cillian Vallely of the famous Vallely artistic clan has performed with Riverdance and recently recorded with Bruce Springsteen.
