February 2025 Celtic Society Newsletter
Greetings from the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay!
|

Greetings!
On February 1st we celebrated St. Brigid’s Day, also known as Imbolc. This ancient Gaelic festival heralds the turning of winter toward the coming of Spring. Once a pagan tradition, the instance is now recognized as a Christian holiday in honor of the patron Saint Brigid of Kildare. Honored for her generosity to the poor, she watches over fugitives, mariners, midwives, milkmaids, nuns, poets, scholars, and travelers, among others. As we move toward longer, warmer days, let us endeavor toward kindness and share the joy of good company with uplifting music and dance.
With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner and a host of big names on their way to the States, we're looking forward to seeing you soon at one of our delightful shows!

Jim Malcolm is one of Scotland’s finest singer/songwriters. He was the lead singer of the Scottish band Old Blind Dogs for seven years and is now focusing on his singer-songwriter music. With Jim Malcolm you can expect to hear traditional songs and ballads, his own compositions, and compelling stories, told both through singing and on their own.
Jim's solo work offers a unique cultural experience. This concert will be highly entertaining, peppered with funny stories and observations, in the great tradition of Scottish artists through the ages.
Susie Malcolm is an award-winning singer with a special knowledge of the musical traditions of North East Scotland. While she was intending to join Jim on the tour, news just in that Susie cannot make the trip to the States at this time.

Acclaimed as one of the great contemporary folk voices of Ireland, Tommy O’Sullivan has remained one of the hidden treasures of traditional Irish music for many years. Tommy and Saundra O’Sullivan’s paths crossed when she attended an annual traditional Irish music retreat in Midlothian, Texas, where Tommy was an Irish guest instructor on guitar and vocals. As they explored singing together, they discovered her alto harmonies to be a perfect match to his tenor vocals.
The two married in Houston, Texas, in March 2010 and they now live in Dingle, Ireland. In 2011 they opened O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub in Dingle which has gained a reputation for world class traditional Irish music. In 2015, National Geographic cited O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub as the go-to pub for traditional Irish music on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.
St Mary's would like to thank Cultúr
Éireann for providing a grant to allow these talented musicians to travel here to promote Irish culture.
