A large Johne's engagement program is underway in UK dairy herds. This has been organized by National Milk Laboratories in conjunction with major milk processors. Operation Johne's also dovetails in with regional schemes such as Healthy Livestock ( formerly SWHLI)
The engagement program was prompted by the Johne's Action Group which was formed by the milk processor organisation Dairy UK.
A team of trained Myhealthyherd Johne's vets have delivered over 34 farmer meetings in the last 6 weeks throughout Scotland, Wales and England to over 650 farmer businesses.
The training aims to help the farmer understand the risks of disease entry and spread for Johne's disease, the likely economic impact and provides an introduction to control options available.
Each farmer is offered a free 30 cow milk sample screen which is submitted to NML for testing. These should be taken from 4-8 year old high risk cows.
The risks and lab results are entered into Myhealthyherd and a Prevalence Report is generated which illustrates the likely true herd prevalence and predicted future prevalence based on the risks of entry and spread. This also provides you and your farmer guidance on most useful control options.
A copy of this report is sent to the vet.The farmers are encouraged to engage with their vets and to pay for advice on how best to control this disease on their farm.
Practices using Myhealthyherd will be able to access the lab results and prevalence reports on line and utilise the program to create an agreed biosecurity and control program.
This is a great opportunity for vets to help their farmer clients with this costly disease.
