Education: Mark pulled up to the abortion clinic in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for his prayer shift as a part of the 40 Days for Life campaign – but it was pouring rain. He decided that God could hear his prayers just as well if he sat in the car. But a few minutes later, another prayer volunteer arrived, put up his umbrella, and stood on the sidewalk to pray. After a few minutes, Mark joined him on the sidewalk.
A young couple drove into the parking lot and Mark made eye contact with the woman. He prayed intensely for her, certain that she had come for an abortion. After about ten minutes, the young woman came out of the clinic and headed right for the two men. She had made an appointment with her

pastor for that morning, determined that if he advised against abortion, she would not go through with it. But the pastor had to cancel the appointment at the last minute. As her husband drove her for the abortion, she prayed for a sign from God that He did not want her to have the abortion. And when they came into the lot, she saw the two men standing in the pouring rain! She knew they were praying, and knew that God had answered her prayer, had sent two men to stand in the rain and pray –for her! Mark and his companion assured her of God’s love and prayed with her. She went back into the building – and soon came out again with her husband, to go home. (1) Prayer anywhere is, indeed, heard. But public prayer is also a powerful witness of God's presence and love.
At another clinic, a couple went into the clinic and it was the young man who came out to talk to the men he saw on the sidewalk. He did not want his girlfriend to have the abortion but had not told her so! They encouraged him to go back in and tell her his feelings. A few minutes later they both came out and went home.

Prayer: Please Lord, give courage and perseverance to the many volunteers who will be participating in the upcoming 40 Days for Life campaign. Help us all to be faithful to our commitments, to be willing to endure the rain or cold or other inconveniences that come up because of our prayer time at the clinic. Lord, help us to be confident that You will hear our prayers and that You will use us to give graces to the women coming to the clinic, and to the workers who will see us outside every day. We thank you for the opportunity to allow You to use us to be a sign of Your love, mercy, and truth.

Please plan now how you can participate. This is an opportunity for you to really make a difference! Do you have the time to spend one hour in prayerful witness on one of those days? Talk to others at your church or your Bible study to find a friend to come with you.
We don’t always know the results of our prayers. Sometimes we see a car pull into the parking lot, but no one gets out. They stay for a while, and then leave. Did they see us and have second thoughts? Former abortion clinic workers report that no-shows for appointments generally go up significantly when people are outside praying.
