Education: In a recent airing of “Last Week Tonight” on HBO, John Oliver attacked pregnancy centers. Abby Johnson was interviewed prior to the segment, but none of the important facts she told them made it into the piece. In an online article in the Federalist, she lists 8 truths that rebut his misrepresentation of centers. Please read the whole

article to better understand the extent of the bias in the media.
The points made by Abby include the following: 1) No social service agency is perfect, and some centers do need more training. But isolated incidents are not a fair basis for generalizations. When Live Action provided video proof from
8 centers in 6 different states about abuses in Planned Parenthood, PP insisted they were “isolated incidents”, but when a few cases from pregnancy centers makes them look bad, then they claim that all centers are like that. 2) Part of the segment included a video where Abby Johnson told pregnancy centers not to flaunt their pro-life stance but that the best client is one who thinks she is approaching an abortion clinic. He accuses them therefore of deception. But in fact pregnancy centers are not doing any false advertising. They are trying to do what they can to welcome women who are considering abortion into their center, in order to save her and her baby from abortion. Not mentioned by Abby is the fact that John Oliver clearly states that claims made in Heartbeat manual about suicides being attributed to abortion, or breast cancer being linked to abortion are false (he uses a more vulgar term). He of course has no basis for saying that and certainly doesn’t mention that those facts are based on scientific studies.

Prayer: Dear Father God, please help the general public to obtain truthful information about the loving services available for women at pregnancy help centers. Please touch the hearts of journalists who knowingly misrepresent pregnancy centers and other pro-life groups in order to discredit them, and lead them to stop such dishonesty. Especially help the women who need those services to obtain an honest report of their helpfulness and be encouraged, rather than discouraged from seeking their help. |

Action: Read Abby’s article and watch John Oliver’s report online. (A link to the report is given in the article – but I do caution that foul language is used.) Ask your friends if they heard the report. Tell them about Abby’s rebuttal and express your dismay that such blatant misrepresentation is shown on HBO. Of course HBO is not alone in slanting their coverage in favor of abortion. See previous weekly emails about
media bias and
online censorship. |
