Dear Maple Village Community,
I would like to share some wonderful news! Congratulations to Miss Charlotte and her husband Jason on their first pregnancy! Miss Charlotte announced the news to the faculty and to her families this week. This is such an exciting time, and the children will surely delight in her growing belly. Baby Guest is due in March, and we are currently interviewing for our Sunflower Kindergarten Substitute teacher, who will carry them through the end of the year. Miss Charlotte plans to work until the birth and then return in the Fall.
Earthquake Drill Followed by Earthquake?
On Wednesday, we conducted our first Earthquake Drill complete with evacuation. We trained our teachers in protocol, and the teachers were excellent guides for your children.
On Thursday, we had an actual earthquake (I’d like to say I predicted it, but I’m not THAT good), and it was felt by everyone in our school. It was a 2.9 magnitude and centered just south of Cal State Long Beach campus.
If this were an larger earthquake, and we needed to have supplies, would your child have extra provisions?
If you have not turned in your child’s earthquake kit, please do so by Wednesday, October 12.
If you are missing the list of suggested items that was sent before Orientation, please see or email Alice to request it.
Thank you our play yard builders! We send much gratitude to Ed Foster (leader extraordinaire), Andreas Preponis, Sudheer Kumar and Dan Steinbacher for working tirelessly on Saturday to rebuild our play structure. The children LOVE it!

Lastly, please note that we DO have school this coming Monday, October 10th (Columbus Day). Please bring your children. We have a STUDENT-FREE day on Monday, October 17th, as this is our Faculty In-Service Day when teachers visit other Waldorf schools to observe. Please do not bring your children on that day. ;-)
Warmly,
Lisa

Evergreen 6th & 7th Grade Class
|
|
|
This week, we began our journey into economics and business math. Today, we continued a fine discussion on what an economy is and how it works. The students came up with some fine realizations that a good economy is based on honesty and respect. They also shared the different professions of their parents and how the services you offer are part of the larger picture of how our economy is run.
We will continue with how business math— using percents, graphs and ratios— helps us to understand profit, interest and…. taxes! I could have taken (another) picture of these students dedicated to making fine pages in their main lesson book--or showing them having a discussion… But instead, I will show a picture of what they are working on for their introductory page and also a photo of the few notes I took on the board summarizing the discussion we were having.

Shady Trees 4th & 5th Grade Class

The Shady Trees had the amazing experience of being taken back in time to the days of the early Tongva people by a Tongva elder, Mr. Torres, at Rancho Los Alamitos! Our classroom studies came alive! The students made a wonderful impression on their docents and hosts by their attention, participation, and they way they looked each in the eyes as they individually shook hands to say thank you. I was proud of our wonderful students.
1) Making our way through the horse barn. These are the types of draft horses that carried knights in full armor!
2) Mr. Torres amid the wealth of local material which he presented to our students after he told stories of The First People.
3) Dressed and adorned in Tongva articles of clothing. We were shown how each was made.
4) Carving soap stone pendants with Mrs. Parker.
5) Completed nature-image soap stone pendants!

Parent Village Corner
Dear Fellow Maple Village Families,
Harvest time is upon us, and that means the annual Maple Village Harvest Faire is around the corner! It is such a wonderful event to share & advertise with the community what our school is about. This event has grown exponentially over the years. The first faires were actually at the school! This year, Kari Rahni has secured the El Ranchito Girl Scout Site on Bellflower Blvd. It is fabulous!
This is one of our schools mosts important fundraising events and food is always an integral part of our Faire. There will be a bake shop with sweet treats galore! We are asking that each MVWS family purchase or make a favorite sweet treat to sell at the bake shop!
Please email
annaestevens@gmail.com or
lisasrines@gmail.com by October 24th with what you plan on donating.
All items to be donated between November 9th - 11th. Drop off @ school can be arranged thru Anna Stevens or Lisa Rines. Please include a small folded card with the name of your item (i.e. Cinnamon Molasses Nut Cookies). There is no school on Friday, November 11th. Also, please fill out the attached
dietary restriction checklist, so that we may accommodate those with dietary limitations.
We know our community has a host of wonderful chefs out there….
Thank you, in advance for your time and donation! Our school depends on our village!
Best,
Anna & Lisa
