Dear Maple Village Families,
I wanted to share with you an incredible honor our school has been given. Last weekend, our 6th/7th grade class was invited to perform their original song at the Plastic Ocean Pollution Solutions International Youth Summit. This event is held annually by Algalita Marine Research and Education at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor. Student teams from all over the world attend this summit in order to come together to tackle the problem of ocean pollution. This year, we met teams from Lebanon, India, Cambodia and Africa in addition to the Bahamas and other states in our own country.
Our students wrote a song about reducing the use of single-use plastics in collaboration with a friend of mine, who is a songwriter. They sang it strong and clear! You can see them here, singing their song, "Refuse and Go", as Algalita used Facebook Live:
https://www.facebook.com/Algalita/videos/10154324786040963/
After our performance, we all ate our lunch at the fire pit area at the complex in the sweet sunshine. Then they had some time to have a good out breath before returning to the hall to listen to more school presentations and the final speaker, Danni Washington, on “Be the Change”. She even led the hall full of students and advisors in saying affirmations (“I am determined! I am a leader! I am… “) to give us the confidence to be a part of the solution.
Next step - filming a video to go along with our song and spreading the word! If you or anyone you know has filming and editing skills and wants to help us pro-bono, please let me know.
Warmly,
Lisa

2017-18 Reenrollment Now Open!
Hello MVWS families,
Reenrollment for the 2017-2018 school year is now open. We will be exclusively enrolling returning students for four weeks until we open the enrollment process to new families as well on March 1st. This reenrollment period is for students currently in preschool through 7th grade -- Parent/Toddler families wanting to enroll in preschool will need to go through our full admissions process, but will still receive enrollment priority over new families.
This year we are offering a registration discount to families reenrolling prior to March 1st: If you reenroll during the month of February, registration fees will be $175 per child. This discount expires on March 1st, when registration fees will increase to $350 per child.
To reenroll, please stop by my office with a completed & signed enrollment contract for each child (
PDF here) and your payment of annual registration & supply fees to hold your child's spot in the class. Enrollment contracts and payment must be submitted together and will not be accepted separately. Please read the entire contract carefully and keep a copy for your records.
If you have questions about the reenrollment process, feel free to call/email me or stop by the office. Questions about your account balance or tuition adjustment should be directed to Suzanne Toro at
suzanne@maplevillageschool.org. All ATA families will need to reapply for next school year by June 1st (update TADS application and submit new offer letter to Suzanne) and will be informed of a decision by June 30th.
Thank you for reenrolling as soon as possible, as this allows us to better prepare financially and logistically for the upcoming school year!
Warmly,
Alice

6th & 7th Grade Evergreen Class
This morning, we had an inspiring presentation from two MVWS parents, Ms. Villano and Ms. Melrose. They talked about on-site opportunities for helping those in need through the church food bank. They also shared what it is like for those who receive our aid. Then the food truck arrived and we just wanted to help right away -- so we did! It was an awesome experience for all!

4th & 5th Grade Shady Trees Class
Along with the Evergreens, we went on a whale watching field trip last week. We had an amazing day! Along with spotting whales, we learned about crabs and lobsters from Adam and received an impromptu lesson about falcons and hawks from urban falconer Laurie Pritchard. (She just happened to be working where we sat down for lunch.)

Parent Village Corner
It's time to begin preparations for our largest and, dare I say, most FUN fundraiser of the year - the Gala! We have vacancies on the Gala committee and are on the search for those who would be willing to help plan and execute this event as well as those able to assist in general. This event requires the help of all of our community to make it a success! We need help in these ways:
- Gathering large donations for auction
- Organizing auction items
- Planning and executing the decor and centerpieces
- Designing and printing tickets and signs
- Set up the Gala on the day of the event
- ...and many more!
Watch for more information on the silent auction items each family will be asked to gather, as well as each class's themed auction basket. Please contact me to let me know how you would like to be involved in this important event.
With gratitude,
Francesca Delfin Preponis
