I have very exciting news!! And an invitation to celebrate it!
Maple Village Waldorf School has been named a 2016 California Green Ribbon School at the Gold Level! Only four private schools in the state of California received this top honor.
State Superintendent Tom Torlakson and Executive Director of the California Association of Private Schools (CAPSO), Dr. Ron Reynolds announced the awards last Friday at a news conference in Northern California. The program honors schools that conserve resources while promoting health and environmental literacy.
Green Ribbon Schools demonstrate exemplary achievement in three pillars: Pillar I: reduce environmental impact and costs; Pillar II: improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and Pillar III: provide effective environmental education that teaches many disciplines and is especially good at effectively incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, civic skills, and green career pathways.
In a letter to the school, the California Association of Private Schools, which oversees the private school component of the Green Ribbon School application process in partnership with the California Department of Education, congratulated Maple Village Waldorf School on "its achievement, appreciative of the dedication, creativity, leadership, and teamwork that underlies this accomplishment."
This is a testament to our nearly zero-waste practices (our commitment to using reusable items and YOUR commitment to packing your children’s lunches in reusable containers, along with our worm and farm composting of all food waste), our use of environmental and natural products, purchasing organic food, providing health and wellness to our students and staff emotionally and physically, as well as our gardening and STEM curriculum.
Thank you to Sarah Lavelle and to Petter Hennum (LBUSD Energy Manager) for helping me tackle this HUGE application from October through December. Thank you to our teachers for implementing these programs and to you for supporting our mission.
The state of California can nominate only one private school to move forward to the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon award, and they have encouraged me to apply again next year with the hope that it could be us! So, look forward to many Green updates in the months ahead as we work for national recognition.
You are invited to celebrate this achievement with us:

Saturday, March 12th
10:30 am - 12:00 pm
This March, we have the special privilege of welcoming a senior Waldorf teacher who will make a presentation on why Waldorf education is so important for the young adolescent. In other words, a specific focus on the middle school years and how all the wonderful threads that we provide weave together to support these growing children. She will be describing the three developmental forces – physical, etheric and astral – and how they work at this stage.
Pat Caverly has been teaching grades students in Waldorf schools for over 30 years. Currently, she is teaching 4th grade at Sanderling in North San Diego county. She comes with much wisdom, experience and insight and we are delighted that she has agreed to present this subject to you.
All MVWS parents and faculty are welcome to attend this free event!
Note that childcare will not be available onsite so please arrange in advance.

Reenroll by Thursday, March 17th to guarantee your spot!
Reenrollment for the 2016-2017 school year is now open. We will be exclusively enrolling returning students for three weeks until we open the enrollment process to new families as well on March 17th. This reenrollment period is for students currently in preschool through 6th grade -- Parent/Toddler families wanting to enroll in preschool will need to go through our full admissions process, but will still receive enrollment priority over new families.
To reenroll, please stop by my office with a completed & signed enrollment contract for each child and $375 payment of annual registration & supply fees to hold your child's spot in the class. Enrollment contracts and payment must be submitted together and will not be accepted separately. Also, reenrollment must be done in person. Please make sure you see me face-to-face (and let me know if scheduling is an issue for you).
If you have questions about the reenrollment process, feel free to call/email me or stop by the office. Questions about your account balance or tuition adjustment should be directed to Suzanne Toro at
suzanne@maplevillageschool.org. All ATA families will need to reapply for next school year (i.e. update TADS application and submit new offer letter to Suzanne).
Thank you for reenrolling as soon as possible, as this allows us to better prepare financially and logistically for the upcoming school year!

Green Piece
POPS Summit was Inspirational for Students
Did you know -
Americans alone used approximately 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. Each day, we produce and utilize 500 million drinking straws.
430 billion single-use food and drink containers are consumed Worldwide per year along with 1 trillion bags? An average of 1.3 million pieces of single-use plastic are consumed per day in Long Beach alone.
All these items are used one time and thrown into the waste stream
From February 26th - 28th, I took our team of Ocean Healers to the
POPS International Youth Summit. Coming from all over the U.S, and as far afield as the Caribbean and Africa, these committed students already grasp the severity of the ocean plastic crisis. They won the opportunity to participate in this three-day Summit based on the innovative projects they submitted on how best to combat plastic pollution in their own communities. This event offers students – ranging from 11 to 18 years old – a chance to learn about current scientific research on plastic pollution, share their action projects with their peers, and work directly with mentors to help develop or improve upon their project plans. 160 participants (students, advisors and speakers) were given a reusable metal cup and spork to bring to every meal, which paired with compostable plates resulted in a zero waste event!
I am so proud of our Evergreen students for not only rising to the occasion, but doing it with intelligence, respect, focus and enthusiasm. After much rehearsal, they gave a presentation about their project to the entire Summit, and the compliments on their poise, clarity and maturity flowed all weekend! For their project, they are writing a song about refusing single-use plastics (bags, bottles, cups, straws, lids and utensils), performing and recording the song and turning it into a music video to spread awareness throughout larger community. The song is called Refuse - Reuse. The weekend was filled with inspirational speakers, workshops and activities. They look forward to continuing to educate our parents and students about ways to reduce the use of single-use plastics in our daily lives. Thank you for continuing to pack lunches in reusable containers! |
