Dear Maple Village Families,
As we settle into the school year, I am so proud of our students. They are truly taking to heart our message of working together as a big family. Here is a perfect example of how we like to co-exist.
Today, I accompanied three of our brave 4th Grade Manzanita students on what we like to call the “Etiquette Tour.” Students identified situations on campus on which they would like everyone to work harder. These normally revolve around bathroom and play yard rules. They made a list of topics (including, but not limited to: using one paper towel and putting it inside the trash can, not splashing water on the floor, being respectful with our bodies on the playground, leaving the banana tree leaves on the tree and the sand in the sandbox..) divided them into categories and went to Grades 1 - 8 to present them. In each classroom, students acknowledged they too saw these as areas they wanted everyone to improve. Some students even gave them added topics to add to their tour presentation.
I was so impressed by how the students act as peer advocates for their school. It is more powerful for them to hear it from each other than to hear the
Charlie Brown Teacher Voice from us all the time. ;-)
I am happy to report, that at the end of the day today, the bathrooms were spotless, and the banana tree smiled at me.
In addition, our older students often act as reading, walking and crafting buddies with our younger students, forming an even more invaluable bond.
Speaking of our beautiful diverse community working together, please, please fill out our 30-second survey below. We are very happy to be one of the most diverse Waldorf Schools in Southern California, and we would like to be able to show that! Everyone’s voice is important.
Thank you!
Lisa

Hot off the Press - Stargazing Concert Music Video!
Does our Stargazing Concert seem like a distant memory? Well, you can relive it here!
Enjoy this short music video of us singing a rendition of Sweet Child of Mine. Filmed and edited by Cole McCarthy.
Thank you to everyone who came out for our annual back-to-school concert and picnic. We were all reveling in the cool weather after days of heat. Families were grilling dinners and sharing desserts. Children were playing in the secure adventure-land of the Girl Scout Camp. Just as the band began to sing, the sky opened up to bring us the gift of rain. After a brief pause of puddle jumping, laughter and families gathering under shelters, we wiped off the equipment and gave it everything we had until the last song was over. It was beautiful. Join us next year! It is our gift to enrolled families.

HARVEST FAIRE VOLUNTEERS and WEEKLY HANDWORK DAY
Hello Villagers,
We will have handwork Wednesdays in the Grove from 9:15-11:30am to make things for Harvest Faire. Please join!
I'd like to thank everyone who has volunteered so far. We are off to a great start! I'd like to ask that each parent volunteer for at least one 2 hour shift during the Faire as well as a set up shift on Friday or Saturday morning or a clean up shift on Saturday afternoon/evening. We will have the site until Sunday morning at 8 am so maybe we make it into a clean up sleepover???
I will be setting up a Shutterfly Share Sites for the Harvest Faire volunteers. We can keep track of meetings, shift etc. as well as share pics of the Faire (and set up)
VILLAGE:
What makes our Harvest Faire unique is our Village. We are going to put a lot of focus on the Village this year. Each station will be well thought out and pulled together and the gifts given will be of real quality. We will have a general script to help you get into your role as well as a dress rehearsal the week before. I encourage you to really take ownership of these roles. The kids will get so much more out of it!
I need one person from each Artisan Station to be a Representative for the cast members. This person will be the liaison between the cast and myself/Meghan/Serina. We will also have a Student Representative from the Evergreen class for each station. This year I will need all Station cast members to help plan and set up their station.
Farmer- activity will be peeling apples (and if we can get our hands on an apple press we can do that too!)
Miller- activity will be grinding wheat into flour.
Baker- roll the dough using their flour from the Miller and churning butter
Candle maker- activity will be dipping and making their own candle.
Inventor- This could be a REALLY FUN
station but it needs someone to help plan it.
Spinner- activity will be washing and carding wool roving and then spinning it into yarn.
Weaver- activity will be helping to weave on a oversized loom.
Wise Woman- activity tbd by Alicia
Wizard- activity tbd by Dan and Mr. Basil
I am also looking for BUILDERS and those that are handy to help Build the Village. Please contact me asap if interested. There are other areas of the Faire that need volunteers. I will focus on these in next weeks bulletin.
In Gratitude,
Kari Rahni

We are raising funds through a YARD SALE being put on this Saturday at 7:30 a.m. by the Willow Tree class. PLEASE come to our school Saturday morning anytime between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. If you’d like to donate your items, please contact Billie Gentry at

Another mechanism we have in place for fundraising is eScrip and ShopwithScrip.com. Please visit the school’s website GIVING tab and simply read the instructions for how to sign up for giving through Scrip. When shopping on Amazon.com, please use the
smile.amazon.com link and select Maple Village Waldorf School as your designated cause. It’s as easy as that. Contact Jessica Tan with any questions
Jessica.seward.tan@gmail.com.
WE NEED ROOM PARENTS TO PLEASE ATTEND THE PV MEETINGS.
This year we have a volunteer coordinator, Alicia Sovich. Thank you, Alicia for helping us to coordinate our required volunteer time. We will be using a credit system. Each family will be responsible for contributing 20 credits throughout this school year. If you cannot contribute 20 credits worth of your time, you will have the option of contributing money instead. It will 20 dollars per credit. This is to help fund the hiring we will have to do if enough parents do not volunteer.
The Harvest Faire will be Saturday, November 11 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Please contact the chair, Kari Rahni, at
562-537-7484 to volunteer. We need everybody’s help! Please!
