Dear Maple Village Families and Community,
Spring is definitely in the air, and as we begin to wrap up this year and plan for next, we have so much to celebrate!
Maple Village Waldorf School has been named a 2016 California Green Ribbon School at the Gold Level! Only four private schools in the state of California received this top honor. Green Ribbon Schools demonstrate exemplary achievement reducing environmental impact and costs; improving the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and providing effective environmental education that teaches many disciplines and is especially good at effectively incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, civic skills, and green career pathways.
In addition, we recently won 1st place in Long Beach for the Cool California Long Beach Challenge for the second year in a row and 1st place in the State of California, proving how dedicated our parents are to saving energy in our homes and in our lives. Not only will MVWS will be awarded a $3,000 prize at a city ceremony on May 26th, we helped Long Beach become the second “coolest” city in California (just under those clever Claremont residents).
We were on the front cover of a local magazine, were named one of the top three preschools in Long Beach, were awarded a spot in a 3-day Plastic Ocean Pollution Solutions International Youth Summit, held educational workshops for the community, crafting workshops for our parents, co-hosted the screening of Beyond Measure, and have displays of upper grade work at two local libraries. Kindergartners are incubating baby chicks, families knitted for the homeless, older students went to the symphony, visited areas important in Long Beach history, and our 5th/6th graders enjoyed a week in the Sequoias on their outdoor educational class trip.
We happily continue to grow, adding new students each month, and our last Walk-Through the Classes was full with 29 visitors!
Please scroll down for a photographic journey of all levels of students in action.
On the adult-end of things,.. get ready for a night out! Book your babysitters and come enjoy an evening together at our upcoming Gala - Under the Stars. This year’s event will be held at a beautiful new location - the Sculpture Garden at the
Museum of Latin American Art. All are invited to attend. Please see the flyer below with all information and
visit the Gala website. It will be a night of live entertainment, delicious food by Primal Alchemy, silent and live auctions, conversation, laughter, and dancing! I hope to see you there.
Warmly,
Lisa J. McCarthy
Dean of Education

Meadow Parent/Toddler Classes
The Meadow classes have been busy celebrating spring! In April we had our annual Flower Festival where we give flowers to the older children at the school while singing spring songs. The children all wear crowns that their families have prepared for them and we share a special feast at the conclusion of the walk through school and handing out our flowers. Our indoor classes dyed silks with red cabbage and our outdoor class made cyanotype prints - a sun print on fabric using natural items found at the park. The cyanotypes are on display in the picture of the blue square fabrics hanging on the line in the classroom. This week we have all made May cones in preparation for May Day on May 1st. The Meadow children are lively, full of laughter, and loving - their parents are, too! We are having a blast together!

In our most recent math block, the 2nd grade class worked with place value and times tables through story and pictures. |

|
|
Together we chose concrete pictures to illustrate numbers up to 1,000,000: a truck for 1,000,000, a shelf or 100,000, etc. These pictures help them to build a sense of quantity and to solve larger and larger math problems. |

Queen Equals took us on a journey to Times Town Lane, a neighborhood near her castle. There we knocked on each of the 12 townhouse doors, and discovered the 12 residents who live in each one. On a treasure hunt, the students found that some residents, like the number 48, live in several of the townhouses!

Sequoia Student Journals 2016
Trip Summary
On March 15, 2016 my class and I got into three different cars and drove 5 hours to Sequoia National Forest. When we got into the foothills of the mountains we started seeing small amounts of snow and when we got deeper into the mountains the snow increased until we could see a foot of snow on the ground. When we got to the Montecito Sequoia Lodge where we were staying we went into our rooms, changed into snow gear and had a huge snowball fight and then had a great meal at the lodge buffet. This went on for that day and the next morning. Then in the afternoon we were taken by a guide to a great sledding spot and sledded there for that entire morning. In the afternoon I think we went snow-shoeing. And then on the third day we got into the cars again and went to Grant Grove Nature Center. We were given a sort of quiz and were told to find two different species of birds and two mammals in the Nature Center display. We then went to Grant Grove and visited the huge sequoia tree named General Grant. We received a booklet from the nature center in which we filled out yet another quiz. And then we went back to the nature center and received plastic Sequoia National Park Junior Ranger badges and then we went home and had another snowball fight. And on the fourth we broke ice in the morning and pretended it was glass and shattered it everywhere. Even on our heads. And then we went back into the cars and took the long drive back to school. The End.
~ Felix
Excerpts From Their Journals
I see creeks and birds. I see thousands of trees all different but all beautiful. They were massive tall trees all around you but so awesome. I see the beautiful canyon and the things in it and out of it. Their calming sounds and that is Kings Canyon.
~ Flynn
Park Ranger, thank you for the wonderful experience. The wider of wonderful sequoias of being about to see incredible sequoia trees. The nature is magnificent seeing wild animals in the wild in a special experience. We visited the great Kings Canyon, a place of unlimited beauty. Thank you for these wonderful experiences. Thanks a lot!
~ Said
I saw many wonders on the trip, there are multiple trees, little streams, snow, rocks and deer. I waked on snow branches. I experienced walking through a giant sequoias and picked up some sequoia cones. This is a beautiful park!
~ Yomaris
Being in the Kings Canyon forest was dazzling. The enormous sequoia and the experience was fun. Hiking with my friends, seeing deer, waterfalls. But walking in the fallen sequoia was the best. Speaking for me and my class, it was fantastic. The General Grant tree was a fascinating sight!
~ Jules
I discovered tiny seeds of the giant sequoia and examined them in my hand. I heard water trickling down from the melting snow. I watched so quietly as the family of deer walked by us.
~ Kian
My experience at Kings Canyon National Park was great. I saw three deer, many scraps of moss, giant sequoias and other interesting wildlife. I also saw some interesting plants too! I hope to come back to Kings Canyon National Park.
~ Peter
Today I saw three trees with huge fire scars on the them. One was a stump with just a bit of burnt bark on it. I also saw three deer really close. I also saw three different types of birds, ravens, robins and a blue jay. I also saw a small waterfall and then a big one too.
~ Jonah
My experience at Kings Canyon was excellent. But what inspired me the most was seeing the General Grant, his beautiful, stretching limbs, reaching higher and higher up to the sky. His thick bark rough and almost sand-paperlike. And the river winding through the trees. The sensational feeling watching trees, wonderful creations of nature.
~ Kenza
I had the best day of my life, I saw deer, waterfalls, also I saw the General Grant sequoia tree and lots of other giant sequoia trees. I love this forest and the sequoias. King Canyon is so beautiful!
~ Michael
These trees, this forest, beautiful beyond belief. As I sit here, listening to the little stream running and cutting through the forest, I wonder what it would be like, just me and the trees. The sincerest silence would envelope me, embracing me, the way a mother would. The wildlife, trusting and respecting me as I would them. And the trees, protecting, sheltering and comforting me in my time of need. Nothing would be as special as bonding with nature herself.
~Kate
I am about to tell you about my adventure in the forest. Today, I saw the biggest tree in the world! I went through a tree that fell, and saw some funny things that just made it better. I smelled wonderful smells in the breeze. I saw and hear waterfalls in the distance. Also, my experience here at the Kings Canyon forest was amazing! I do love it very much and I hope to come back again soon! Thank you!
~ Garrett
Sequoia was one of the most amazing places I have been. I have never seen such blue skies or green forests. I also have never been so close to real wildlife before. I am so lucky to be able to live in an environment where I can just get in a car and drive to such wonderful places. I really do hope I can go back some day.

It's a Wrap (Literally)!
Thank you so much to all who donated yarn, spent time knitting scarves and blankets, held knitting parties and gave monetary donations to support our school while helping those in need. The final hand-knitted items from our Knit-A-Palooza campaign have been delivered to the food bank and are much appreciated by the community!
