May 25th, 2010 The Mexican film "Nora's Will" was a triumphant success in its own country as it was nominated for a record 11 Ariel Awards, the Mexican Academy of Film Awards, and took home seven of them, including Best Picture.
This phenomenal success has translated very well to South Florida film audiences during its local run.
"The film "Nora's Will' has drawn both Jewish and Latin audiences in large numbers," said Neil Friedman, preside
nt
of the film's United States distributor, Menemsha Films. "Given these two large demos for the film, "Nora's Will" is very much the perfect kind of film for South Florida audiences."
The dark comedy that
takes place during Passover began its local run with a positive turnout at the Tower Theater in Miami and as a result has since expanded to five other screens in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Mariana Chenillo, the film's director and screenwriter, said that even though the story takes place within the context of the Mexican Jewish community, it is not a story about religion or one meant to reach only a specific audience.
"This is a love story that could happen within any family and I believe that the fact that it is so specific is what makes it universal," she added. "I also think that the film portraits contemporary Mexico in many ways by showing how we understand death and how we continue to make dead family members part of daily lives."
