What is YOUR Steno Baking Soda? |
|
|
A few years ago I came downstairs, looked at the kitchen counter, and saw three bruised bananas looking back at me. Like every good American, I knew what I had to do - make banana bread!
So I checked the ingredients and got to work. Eggs - check! Flour - check! Sugar - check! Vanilla - check! Baking soda...NO check! No baking soda in the house. 1/2 teaspoon - seriously?!?! That's hardly anything - what purpose can that possibly serve??!! So I decided to just skip it.
Mixed it all up - poured it into the mold - shoved it into the oven. And roughly an hour later...banana pancake! Turns out baking soda is what makes everything rise. Who knew??? (well...somebody knew...but I didn't)
I was missing one tiny, small, itsy bitsy ingredient...and it didn't rise. Hmmm...maybe, just maybe, that's an analogy for speedbuilding. Are you adding all the ingredients? Writing? Reading back? Transcribing? Drills? Faster speeds? Slower speeds? Testing? Theory review? Structure? Feedback?
You only rise when you add all the proper ingredients.

New Steno Math vs. Old Steno Math |

What is 9 and 9 and 9? My answer is 27. And I came up with it by thinking -
10X3=30
30-3=27
And I PROMISE you that I came up with the answer of 27 as fast as anyone who used the following methods -
3X9=27
9+9+9=27
9+9=18 18+9=27
That's just how my brain works - has always worked. Actually, it is a form of "new math" now, but growing up, it was frowned upon.
Whatever. It's not good...or bad...it's just how my mind gets the answer the quickest. I think the same applies to steno. To suggest that one way of writing something is "better" or "worse" is just silly. The ONLY thing that matters is how your brain works - and what strokes move from your brain to your fingers the fastest. I'm not saying you can't try other ways and experiment and expand. I'm saying that at the end of the day, it's what comes to your fingers the fastest. And NO ONE can tell you exactly how YOUR brain processes things the fastest.
If everyone's brain worked the same, we'd have one theory, one way of writing everything, one type of training, and a million court reporters...which we can probably use right now!

SimplySteno Enrollment Closes November 19, 2022!
Join by then and get a FREE month added!
Thinking of joining the SimplySteno online program? Make sure you sign up by 11/19/22 - and get a FREE month added! Open enrollment will be closing for at least a couple months after that. We do this a couple times a year to keep the student number low. And you DO NOT have to start right away. Once you join, you have up to 3 months to actually start, so if you're sure you want to start within the next few months, now's the time to get in. SimplySteno has been a leader in court reporting education for over 16 years!
Daily Structure - We give you a daily schedule that details EXACTLY what to do, why you're doing it, and what you should be getting out of it. Schedules are 5 days a week, an average of 3.5 hours a day. Schedules can be completed on YOUR time - you decide what works best for you.
Feedback - You'll be tested several times a week. We'll grade and send those tests back in an average of 4 days - corrections and comments included!
Live Classes - We average 8 hours of live classes each week - different speeds, days and times each week so that everyone gets an opportunity to attend (attendance is voluntary).
Dictations - Our media libraries (audio and video) contain THOUSANDS of dictations of every type (including recordings of the live classes). And we always use HUMAN VOICES - no text to voice software (blech!).
SimplySteno Flashcards - Designed specifically for court reporting students, our flashcard system has over 70,000 cards to study.
SimplySteno Happy Funtime Hours! - Zoom meetings designed to get SS students together for some learning and socialization.
And so much more!

I'll Practice...If I Have Time |
|
|
|
If you're anything like me, you have a list of things to do. In fact, each day I make an ACTUAL list of things I have to accomplish. Just as an example, here's yesterday's list -
1. Laundry
2. Grade Tests
3. Food Shopping
4. Feed Dog
5. Go to Bank
6. Take out Trash
I had a pretty productive day, but couldn't quite finish everything on the list. I didn't have time to feed the dog. Oh, well, I'll get to it tomorrow.
NUTS, right?!?! Feeding the dog should be a MUST DO, not an "If I have time," item on my list. Same goes for steno practice. When something becomes an "If I have time" item on your list, you often find it pushed back and back and back... Steno practice needs to be on your schedule as something you need to accomplish THAT day - it needs a time slot. I suggest to students that they do their best to make it the same time each day, just as if you were in a classroom setting. When you do this, it becomes a habit - and those around you know that this is your practice time - they're less likely to interrupt you.
So don't make steno practice an "If I have time" thing - make it a "MUST DO" thing!
