Looking For You
New & old Photography by Rimas Zailskas

at the Flood Gallery Fine Art Center
Rimas Zailskas has been a photographer for over 30 years. He is also the publisher, along with his wife Mary, of Bold Life and Carolina Home + Garden magazines.
Previous exhibits include two solo shows at the Flood Gallery in Asheville. The Living Mask (2012) was comprised of 30 pinhole portraits of people. Asimulacrum (2014) was the flip side of his previous exhibit. The show was comprised of 20 very large (3” x 4”) black and white portraits, providing an intimate and penetrating look at his subjects.
Endless Night, previously at the Upstairs Artspace, abandons portraiture to look at the world in a new way. Over 60 large black and white images are combined with text to present a false awakening - a dream about awakening from sleep while the dreamer in reality continues to sleep. It is a dream within a dream.
His current exhibit, "Looking for You," opening at the Flood Gallery May 20th is another exploration of masks showing portraits of people hiding their inter-most personas behind exotic masks from around the world.
Shelby Stephenson, the North Carolina's Poet Laureate, will read from his forthcoming book of poetry, titled "Country" at the "Looking for You" exhibition at the Flood Gallery, on May 20th.
Shelby Stephenson grew up on a small farm near Benson, in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. “Most of my poems come out of my background,” he says, “where memory and imagination play on one another."
The state of North Carolina presented him with the 2001 North Carolina Award in Literature. And he has received the Bellday Poetry Prize, the Oscar Arnold Young Award, the Zoe Kincaid-Brockman Award, the Brockman-Campbell Award, the Bright Hill Press Chapbook Prize, and the Playwright's Fund of North Carolina Chapbook Prize.
He is the current Poet Laureate for the State of North Carolina.

"Stolen Kisses" by François Truffaut

"The Quiller Memorandum" by Michael Anderson
(UK, 1966; 1hr 45 min)
Two British agents are murdered by a mysterious Neonazi organization in West Berlin, and American agent Quiller is sent to investigate, soon becoming involved in a dangerous contest. With its gritty, real-world depiction of contemporary international espionage, this film was one of the more notable “anti-Bond” films of the 1960s. Noted for its plot twists and the portrayal of Quiller as refreshingly vulnerable and occasionally inept. Starring George Segal, Alec Guinness, and Max von Sydow.

A wild, freeform, Rabelaisian trip through the darkest recesses of Edinburgh low-life, focusing on Mark Renton and his attempt to give up his heroin habit, and how it affects his relationship with family and friends: Sean Connery wannabe Sick Boy, dimbulb Spud, psycho Begbie, 14-year-old girlfriend Diane, and clean-cut athlete Tommy, who's never touched drugs but can't help being curious about them...

"The Wild Child" by François Truffaut
(France 1970; 1hr 23 min)
This is the essentially true story of a "wolf boy" who lived like an animal in the woods, and about the doctor who adopted him and tried to civilize him. Truffaut tells the story simply and movingly. It becomes his most thoughtful statement on his favorite subject: The way young people grow up, explore themselves, and attempt to function creatively in the world.

Open mic is hosted every Sunday by Jarrett Leone at the Flood Fine Art Center. Sign up is 5pm and the open mic begins at 5:30pm and runs to 7:30pm. Everyone gets at least 15 min to perform so bring your best songs, poetry, comedy or whatever and claim your fame!

Join us for an evening of original music and group song with songwriter and folk artist Ash Devine and Andy Cohen to celebrate the need for love and change in the world, the concert will focus on love, revolution and community change. Expect to hear original americana-etherial-folk songs to activate your heart, to learn a few songs for singing and to connect at Asheville's new epicenter of art, The Flood Gallery.
Ash Devine has been in Asheville for over 13 years and is a dear friend of the Flood Gallery.
Ash Devine is an award winning songwriter, folk musician, theater artist, humanitarian clown and social activist originally from the Blue Ridge of VA.

grew up in a house with a piano and a lot of Dixieland Jazz records, amplified after a while by a cornet that his dad got him. At about fifteen, he got bitten by the Folk Music bug, and soon got to hear records by Big Bill Broonzy and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, both of which reminded him of the music he grew up to. At sixteen, he saw Reverend Gary Davis, and his course was set. He knew he had it in him to follow, study, perform and promote the music of the southeast quadrant, America’s great musical fountainhead. Although he’s done other things, a certain amount of writing and physical labor from dishwashing and railroading to archeology, playing the old tunes is what he does best.
