WBAF News – September 2017
The World Business Angels Investment Forum News
Dear Friends,
I hope you had a wonderful September and are ready for a new business season. WBAF has wonderful news for you!
September was a very busy month for WBAF. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) World Chambers Federation (WDF) held its 10th biennial conference in Sydney, where the WBAF Chairman moderated an important session entitled ‘Easing access to finance for young entrepreneurs’. Panellists included the JCI Global President and members of the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council.
Another important event was the 34th Annual Congress of the International Association of Science Parks (IASP), held in Istanbul. The WBAF Chairman gave a speech at the congress on positioning technoparks in the financial road map of entrepreneurs. I hope you will enjoy the video of the session.
WBAF was very visible in international media in September. Hong Kong’s Harbour Times, in an article entitled ‘Angels on Earth: Helping the Next Generation of Great Companies Move Forward!’ featured an exclusive interview with WBAF Chairman on angel investment. Angel News, published in the U.K., highlighted various WBAF activities. I hope you will enjoy reading these articles.
The Angel Investor magazine asks this month: How can we redefine public and private partnerships to create more impact for world societies? I am sure you will find interesting new ideas for boosting local economies by developing innovative tools to strengthen ties between public and private institutions.
The WBAF World Congress 2018 website is now live. The 2018 WBAF World Congress, to be held in Istanbul, strives to shape the global agenda of the world’s early-stage equity markets. Building on the success of the 2017 conference, this year’s forum will focus on the theme of ‘Unlocking the Potential for Innovation: Angel Investors Partnering with Family Offices and Wealth Management Institutions’.
Don’t miss the application and nomination deadlines for the World Excellence Awards
• The World Excellence Awards 2018: From business angels to policymakers to academics, the World Excellence Awards salute those who stand out in imagining, discussing, and shaping the future of an entrepreneurial world.
• The deadline for applications and nominations is 30 November 2017.
In this issue of WBAF News, you will find an interesting report on entrepreneurship in the BNP Paribas Global Entrepreneur Report. Based on a survey conducted by Scorpio Partnership, the report analyses the behaviour of 2,650 multimillionaire entrepreneurs across Europe, Asia, and North America with an aggregate wealth of over 40 billion dollars. I am sure you will keep this report in your files.
With my best regards,
Baybars Altuntas

WBAF Chairman moderates a session at the World Chambers Congress in Sydney
‘The World Chambers Congress is the premier event of its kind, bringing together chamber, business and government figures alike. Now in its 10th edition, this flagship event is much more than just a chamber’s gathering. In convening the globe’s most prominent leaders and brightest minds, it aims to transform the future of business. The #10WCC was jointly organised by the Sydney Business Chamber, a division of the New South Wales Business Chamber. It was held in Sydney, Australia 19-21 September 2017, at the International Convention Centre Sydney, the harbour city’s newest convention centre.’
The session moderated by WBAF Chairman Altuntas discussed:
• how current business models, best business practices, corporate culture, and chamber practices can evolve so as to encourage innovation and creativity,
• what skill sets, values, and knowledge should be imparted to future business leaders,
• the state of entrepreneurship in various regions,
• and why businesses should invest in corporate social responsibility and grassroots, community-based initiatives.

Positioning Technoparks in the Financial Road Map of Entrepreneurs
IASP’s 34th Annual Congress was held in Istanbul 26 – 29 September. The International Association of Science Parks (IASP) has long been a global reference on science and technology parks, fully grasping the opportunities and movements connected to innovation, understanding the evolution of the traditional parks and the new role of cities in the urban, economic and social transformation. Beyond being local innovation ecosystems, IASP recognises that technoparks must be global connectors of the worldwide innovation ecosystem.
WBAF Chairman Altuntas, an invited speaker at this particular event of the world’s innovation ecosystem, delivered a speech on positioning technoparks in the financial road map of entrepreneurs.

Angel News: This gives him a perspective that few of us have, but one that is going to become more and more important, especially to UK investors as we look to a time beyond Brexit.’
Angel News, published in the U.K., featured an article about WBAF. Modwenna Rose says in her article,
(Angel News - London) ‘[Baybars, thanks to his being located in Turkey] sits at the juxtaposition between East and West. This gives him a perspective that few of us have, but one that is going to become more and more important especially to UK investors as we look to a time beyond Brexit. The smartest investors have already clocked the potential of Turkish entrepreneurship and are backing companies coming from there. I recommend that you should, too. I have been remarkably impressed by the quality of the businesses looking for backing during my two recent visits to Istanbul. [A] date for your diary is the WBAF Annual Congress in Istanbul 18-20 February 2018. http://www.wbaf2018.istanbul/wbaf-annual-congress-2018/about/. By attending, you will see for yourself that no angel these days can afford to just look locally or even nationally for opportunities.’

Angel Investor magazine asks:
How can we redefine public and private partnerships to ease access to finance for entrepreneurs?
‘SME’s and start-ups face enormous challenges. Among the toughest is their struggle to access finance and inability to accumulate capital. This lack of financial resourcing impedes growth, business development, and ability to hire – in other words, SMEs that have the potential for exponential or fast growth instead grow far slower. A consequence of this challenge has been a shift of focus, where innovation becomes a vehicle to decrease production costs, respond quickly to evolving consumer needs, and ultimately preserve and sustain an SME’s competitiveness. How business angel networks in chambers of commerce are created and executed is of paramount importance – it would be easy to write off the idea, if poorly executed.’
