City of Youngstown and YNDC to Launch Live Youngstown Program
|
|
|
In March 2017, the City of Youngstown granted $1,500,000 to the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation, finalizing a partnership to catalyze the renovation and purchase of a larger volume of vacant homes, increasing homeownership as part of broader neighborhood revitalization strategies in neighborhoods throughout the city. The program is called Live Youngstown and will achieve the goal of returning vacant homes to productive and taxpaying use as market-rate, market-ready products, thereby increasing homeownership, population, and tax base in the city.

YNDC Offers 2nd Round of Youth Greening Grant |

YNDC has held 3 technical assistance workshops and many one-on-one meetings to help groups and individuals across the city get their project applications ready. YNDC anticipates making 10-15 grant awards in 2017, to be announced in early April.

On Wednesday, March 15, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team Maple 7 arrived in Youngstown to fight blight with YNDC for six weeks.

South Avenue Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design |
|
|
In January of 2017, seven South Avenue business owners were awarded small grants, ranging from $1,000-$2,000, to make safety-related improvements to their buildings following the principles of CPTED, or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. The seven South Avenue businesses used CPTED grant funding to install additional lighting, increase property surveillance, repair and install fencing, and improve signage. Funding was provided through the US Department of Justice Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation project.

Volunteers Clean Out Vacant Home and Clean Up Mineral Springs Ave. |
|
|
On Saturday, March 18, over 80 volunteers helped clean out a vacant home at 3235 Sunnybrooke Drive and cleaned up Mineral Springs Avenue at a YNDC Neighborhood Workday. 170 cubic yards of debris were removed from the two workday sites and 850 linear feet of sidewalk was scraped.

On Saturday, March 25, residents, community leaders, and representatives from YPD, YSU, and YNDC participated in a safety training at Homestead Park. The training outlined the principles of CPTED, or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, and applied these to a park setting.
