My new release: Overdue
A thriller for our time |
|
During the last few months, confined at home because of the spreading pandemic, I wrote my new thriller, Overdue, with a guiding thought in mind: here we are, living in this historic moment, and I must commit to paper what it feels like. I must use the widespread angst we all suffer through, because in a way, this is not only a contemporary story but also a one of a grave historical meaning.
I tried to capture the despair of old people languishing in isolation. The feel of the streets, where the homeless are left to fend for themselves and rioters stir unrest. The doubt you have when faced with masked people, seemingly devoid of faces, of identities, to the point that criminals can easily pose as medics, they can use the new method of transporting the dead in refrigerator trucks as a way to escape justice.
I fully understand that different readers may have different experiences with the story, because unfortunately our society is so divided these days. What to one person is the truth can be perceived as a provocation to another. Even so, I am compelled to take a snapshot of reality from where I stand.
Here is an excerpt:
This is a new world. A world where you can never be sure what to believe; where a pandemic is called a hoax, which allows it to spread unabated; where, in the face of a rising death toll, the promise of a vaccine is being dangled without any scientific basis whatsoever by politicians who’ll do just about anything to remain in power; where you better stay more than a breath away from crowds; where you must protect yourself from a hug, a handshake can be dangerous, and a kiss can kill.

The White Piano
From USA Today Bestselling Author, Uvi Poznansky, comes a compelling novel about family secrets:
Coming back to his childhood home after years of absence, Ben is unprepared for the secret, which is now revealed to him: his mother, Natasha, who used to be a brilliant pianist, is losing herself to mysterious disease, which turns the way her mind works into a riddle. His father’s new wife, Anita, looks remarkably similar to her—only much younger.
“In our family, forgiveness is something you pray for, something you yearn to receive—but so seldom do you give it to others.” What emerges in this family is a struggle, a desperate, daring struggle to find a path out of conflicts, out of isolation, from guilt to forgiveness.
★★★★★ “Captivating and commendable, this work had me immersed from the beginning.”

My oil painting
Earthquake
This painting was inspired by watching the earthquake in Haiti.
When do you choose to describe a subject in writing, and when do you choose to paint it? For me, the answer lies in the fact that the brain allows you to absorb a picture all at once, but a story--word by word. So when the subject at hand is too overwhelming, when words fail me, this is when I pick up my paintbrush.

From my kitchen to yours...
It took tender loving care to create these delicacies and sprinkle them with powdered sugar...
Ingredients:
Dough
- 2 packets active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk (reserve the egg white)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
- 3 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour, sifted
Filling
- 1/4 cup thick strawberry jam
For frying and coating
- Confectioner’s sugar
- Vegetable oil
|
|
|
|
|
Directions:
In a large bowl, combine the yeast, half cup water, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes till it’s foamy, then add the remaining half cup water, 1/3 cup sugar, melted butter, egg, egg yolk, salt, and instant nonfat dry milk. sift 2 1/3 cup flour and add to the mixture, beating with an electric mixture on medium speed for 5 minutes. Stir in the remaining 1 cup flour to make a soft dough.
cover the bowl with plastic wrap and a dish towel and let it rise for an hour or two until doubled in bulk.
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and kneed till it’s smooth. Divide in half, roll out each half to a 1/4 inch thickness. Using a glass cup, cut out 3-inch diameter circles out of the rolled out dough.
Beat out the reserved egg white until frothy and brush it on all the circles.
Place a scant teaspoon of jam in the center of a circle, then top it with another circle (sandwich style) and pinch the edge of the perimeter firmly together all around. Repeat with all the circles. Cover loosely with a plastic wrap and let rise until doubled in bulk, about one hour.
Put enough oil in a pot so it’s 2 inch deep, heat it till it’s 350 degrees (or until a slice of carrot floats to the top of the oil.) Gently drop a few of the doughnuts at a time (don’t crowd the pot) and fry them on each side for 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove them from the oil and set on paper towels to drain the oil. Coat them with confectioner’s sugar.
Best eaten when fresh.
