There is a growing problem in Britain and Australia called the “Tall Poppy Syndrome,” where if you stand out for high achievement you are ridiculed, bullied, and even physically assaulted by peers. What is this world coming to when everyone has to lower themselves to the weakest link in society in order to fit in!

Dear John, Your recent "Florida Tennis" article on the mental side of the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open was fascinating. Also, While I was waiting in the doctor’s office yesterday, I picked up People Magazine and read this article that reminded me of sport psychology.  The article from April 13, 2009, “Up and Running” described the story of former Olympian, Suzy Favor Hamilton. She was leading the 1500m in Sydney on September 30, 2000, when she fell with less than 200m to go. No one realized then that she was struggling with depression  which destroyed her athletic career. I don’t think I would have noticed the story if I had not been working with you on the Psychological Aspects of Athletic Injury.
