The day we've been waiting for is upon us. Due to the recent rain of the past two day, the water us back up to almost normal flow on the Housatonic River. As I write this at 8:15 AM on Thursday, the CFS (Cubic Feet per Second) flow is 646, the water temperature is 58, the air temperature is 60. As today goes on the sky will clear, and we'll have warmer temps tomorrow. Saturday's weather should be clear, partly sunny, with a high of 66 which should have the water around 60 degrees-does it get any better than that?
The outing will be taking place at Housatonic Meadows State Park, just north of the intersection of CT-4 and US-7 in Cornwall Bridge. If you're coming from Torrington and points east, take CT-4 out of Torrington, thru Goshen, and down the hill past Mohawk State Park. At the bottom of the hill, take a left turn, staying on CT-4 and follow it into Cornwall Bridge (about six miles), Go across the Housatonic River on CT-4 and take the first right, onto US-7 and follow it to the park.
From Caanan, Falls Village, Lakeville and beyond, take US-7 south about five miles past the covered bridge in West Cornwall, and the park will be on your left, just before the stop sign on CT-4.
From Sharon, Millerton(NY) or points west, take CT-4 to the intersection of US-7 and take a left. The park will be on your right, just past the parking area to the AT on the left.
From Kent, take US-7 north about 8 miles, and stay on US-7 about a city block past CT-4. The park will be on your right.
As you can see on the map below, once you get into the park, stay on the road, it turns right and goes through a small forest to the rear parking lot (right on the river) and that's where we'll be.
If you need tippet, leaders or flies (or anything else), Housatonic River Outfitters is in Cornwall Bridge across from the general store.
We'll be meeting up any time after 7:00 AM. Look for the NWCTU banner and tents. If you see a little Subaru with the "FLYFSHN" license plate, you've come to the right place.
We'll be having lunch around 1pm, with snacks, coffee and chips before. Make sure you stop at the tent to let us know who you are - you might have won something If you want casting lessons or need to practice doing something (casting, tying knots; etc), let us know. Someone will be there for that all day.
After lunch we'll have a casting competition, contests, our 50/50 raffle, more food and more fun and fishing. Housatonic Meadows is easy wading but you should bring a wading staff and waders if you have them. The entire area, down to the bridge is Catch and Release, Fly Fishing Only, so if you don't know how to cast a fly rod or need more lessons, this would be the perfect time to learn, then get out on the water, and learn how to do it!
