Our picnic location for the 14th (next Saturday) has changed! Originally set up for an area of the Housatonic in North Kent, we've decided to move to Riverton, and fish for trout and salmon on the W.B. Farmington River, at
Whittemore Recreation area.
This sign is located on East River Rd, exactly 1.2 miles south of the bridge at CT-20 and East River. Turn into the park, and the parking lot is straight in and to the right. The Whittemore recreation area is an often overlooked area, but the pools and runs are deep and cold, the gravel bar makes wading ideal, and because the area is easily overlooked, the fishing pressure is much lower than along Hogback Road, at or around Church Pool or at the Woodshop, Drive-in or at Greenwoods.
You will need Connecticut State Fishing License and Trout Stamp (2018) to legally fish this area.
The picnic begins around 11:00AM. Please park in the lot and not in front of the banners so latecomers can still find us. Look for the friendly people under the TU Banners.
If you are new to TU, you should know that
members eat free. If you are not yet a member, we'll let you
join at any chapter event
at half off the regular price of $35 and collect
only $17.50 which covers your food and activities for the day, and your first year's membership to TU. If you've got friends who have been meaning to learn to cast a fly rod, bring them to the picnic. We've always got some of our practice rods available and more than enough advanced casters to teach.
This picnic is a great place to learn or practice your casting techniques - there's a huge lmanicured lawn on East River Road that stretches all the way back to the parking lot, so we'll put some targets out for you to cast at!
If you're fly-fishing, bring a 3wt, 4wt or 5wt rod and a landing net.
The closest fly-shop is "Up Country" on CT-44 in New Hartford. Restroom facilities are available at this location.
