Welcome Back!
September is here (almost), and we've got lots to announce! We've got two events in September, two in October, at least two in November, a party in December and that's just the beginning of a great year we've got planned!
First off, please join us on Tuesday, September 4th, at the Torrington Knights of Columbus (corner of Prospect and Litchfield Streets), at 7:30 pm for our September meeting. Our agenda includes a fly-swap, picking the dates and locations for our five picnic/fishing events of 2019, our two upcoming Salmon trips, our holiday party, our ongoing conservation efforts at the confluence of Macedonia Brook and the Housatonic River (in the Bulls Bridge TMA) upcoming chapter elections and more. Refreshments will be served and we'll be showing about 28 minutes of footage of the Margaree River (October Salmon Trip). Be sure to bring a fly for the fly-swap, and come on time so you don't miss anything, including finding a place to sit and enjoy your coffee & snacks.
We've made some major changes to our website (at www.nwctu.com) including a Photo Gallery, a forum (blog), and some great links to important sites. If you have photos of any chapter events of the past, please send them to the chapter post office box with descriptions of them, and a return address (all photos will be returned), You can also bring them to a meeting.
We've got a few of our Chapter branded fishing caps left from our initial order and they will be available at the meeting for a low price of $20 which goes toward their cost and puts a couple bucks into our treasury for upcoming events. Supplies for these 'lucky hats' are limited to what we've got left - word got out that wearing this hat actualy helps you catch more fish - the prices at the distributors have gone up so the next time we order, they'll more than likely cost more.

Please attend our September 2018 joint picnic with the Farmington Valley chapter of TU at the Matthies Grove Pavilion in People's State Forest, on September 8th, 10:00 a.m.
Joining us, will be both Antione Bissieux "The French Fly-Fisherman" and representatives from "Northeast Spey", two reknown guide services on the Farmington River. Besides the demonstrations by our guests, we've got much in store like aquatic insect discovery (see what the fish are eating), an in-depth conservation discussion on local efforts, our Embrace A Stream project on Macedonia Brook at the confluence of the Housatonic in the Bulls Bridge TMA, fly casting instruction, and more.
If you plan to fish, you will need a CT State Fishing License and a Trout Stamp. The water in the Farmington is always cold as the river is a "tailwater"; flow is controlled by the upstream dam. As a rule, the west branch of the Farmington River is best waded with waders and studded felt or vibram soles, but in a pinch, sneakers or rubber boots can also be used. Please visit our

October 2nd-9th
Margaree River
Salmon Trip

Salmon Angling on the Margaree has been part of the acadian culture for well over a hundred years. People have been coming from all over the world to fish this amazing river which is surrounded by amazing scenery and welcoming people.
This, our first trip to the Margaree, will be from the 2nd of October to the 9th. The location we'll be travelling to is Margaree Forks, on Cape Breton Island, which from Torrington, is just shy of 900 miles (about 14.5 hours). The total cost per fisherman (not counting transportation or food) is expected to be less than $200, due to the current exchange rate of US to Canadian currency, and the low prices at area lodging, even in the midst of Salmon season.

As I write this, we're staying at Margaree Forks (see map) at a resort on the river. Nearby is the Cabot Trail and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Also, while we're there, several (over 50) musical acts will be in the area for the "Celtic Colors International Music Festival".
Nova Scotia is the only province in Canada a fishing guide is not required, the the cost of a fishing license for a non-resident for a week, is about $60 US. To fish the Margaree in October, you should have at minimum an 8wt or 9wt, 9ft rod, reel and line or a spey rod of the same weight. Again, details including travel assignments at our September meeting.

Do you cast well? Do you like to help others? NWCTU is teaching a beginner's Fly-Casting class, through the Foothills Continuing Adult Education program in Litchfield this fall (First 3 weeks of October & November)
We'll be teaching the tying of a few knots, the practice of safe wading, and different kinds of casting, in a six week course on Wednesday evenings. Our students will each have new fly rods/reels and will need help learning. Please attend our Sept 4th meeting for more info or call 860-248-2090 to volunteer for one or two nights.

Last November, five brave souls visited the Douglaston Salmon Run, a well known destination only six hours from Torrington, in western NY State, on the Salmon River, close to the mouth, on Lake Ontario.
The cost of the trip, (transportation and food not included) last year, was $488 each person.
The results were amazing
 as you can see from this photo of Vice President Evan Williams, with one of his fish last year. More photos are available on our website, but better yet, add your name to the list of folks going this year,currently, spots are open from mid-October to late November.
