Robert Sutton: Scaling-Up Excellence |
|
Championing change in complex organizations—like our courts—is no small task. There are many stakeholders who bring divergent perspectives to the table. It's challenging enough to develop an agreeable solution that serves the justice system in a particular location or case—but the next step is to scale the solution so it can be widely implemented. That’s a daunting endeavor. Robert Sutton, the keynote of this year’s Summit, would call it “scaling excellence,” which is the topic of his next book. Sutton is currently studying how behavior spreads within and across organizations and networks in numerous industries. He will speak about identifying the factors that make behaviors scalable and how that concept relates to the court system.
Sutton is the Professor of Management Science and Engineering at the Stanford Engineering School. He is co-founder of the Center for Work, Technology and Organization, which he directed from 1996 to 2006. Sutton is also co-founder of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program and the new Hasso Planter Institute of Design, a multi-disciplinary program at Stanford that teaches and spreads “design thinking.” He is an IDEO Fellow, member of the Institute for the Future’s Board of Trustees, and a Professor of Organizational Behavior, by courtesy, at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Sutton is an award-winning author and speaker. Sutton studies the links between managerial knowledge and organizational action, innovation, and organizational performance. Sutton’s current book project is tentatively titled:
Scaling-Up Excellence.
