Dear Bichon lovers,
At this time of year, we want to give thanks and to share another miracle with you.
This has been such a rough year for so many people. And when it's rough for us, it is equally if not more challenging for those little ones we hold so dear.
On the morning of Dec. 16th, when many were finishing their holiday shopping and gift wrapping, a little guy was wandering the very cold streets of Escondido in search of a dry and safe place to stay. He should not have been out in the cold and wet - but he was. And that is where the miracle 'almost' begins.
Wandering the streets in search of cover this little guy was hit by a car. That driver dragged him behind the car for several blocks, then stopped near a dumpster on Rose Avenue and tossed him in.... a disposable, broken dog, of no value to that driver, obviously.
An unnamed good Samaritan called the Escondido Animal Control who went to the dumpster to 'retrieve the body.' What they discovered was a little guy whose back legs had been crushed but whose spirit was strong. Animal Control took him to an emergency vet where he was given pain medications, received x-rays and was diagnosed as having no broken bones (that was when the miracle began.) The vets also determined that his back legs were only tendons and ligaments, as all skin and hair had been torn away.
Escondido Humane Society knew that the kind of care this little bichon required would be something they could not provide. One of the shelter staff reached out to a BFK volunteer, LoriAnne, to tell her about him. That's where the second miracle starts.
You see we are truly blessed with wonderful volunteers, adopters and supporters. One of our foster moms, Danna, is a vet tech so, of course, we called her. Before I could even finish his story Danna said 'I'll take him. When can you get him here?" Need I tell you how full my heart was at that moment? And that was before seeing this little miracle boy.
So we named him Nicholas and brought him to Danna, where he has begun his recovery. Nicholas goes to her clinic in Pacific Beach every day, where Danna changes his bandages to prevent infection. Every night Nicholas goes home to Danna, her husband and their pack, where he tries his best to be one of the 'kids.'
Two other BFK volunteers, Lauren, and Cathy, were determined to tell his story. They wanted the media to let people know about Nicholas - and to try and find the person who did this awful thing! They wanted to show whagt an amazing and determined-to-survive little bichon this boy truly is. Lauren reached the news desk at KUSI and Cathy has been reaching out to other channels and writers.
Please watch this video that was made at KUSI and shows Nicholas 'racing' around on two legs, acting as if there was nothing wrong with him, And when I tried to 'walk him' holding up his back legs with a sling, I had to race to keep up! (Danna has the hang of it a lot better than I do!) Nicholas is definitely a survivor with a true bichon heart and soul - and an inspiration for all of us.
And Tom, Karen and Debbie from My Perfect Pet (myperfectpet.net) are Nicholas' nutrition sponsors. They are providing the wonderful food that is helping him to heal and recover his strength. (So that's why he thinks he can now leap tall buildings in a single bound.)
As we enter this new year, we hope it will be a wonderful one for all of you - and for the many FurKids who fill our homes and hearts.
Please keep Nicholas in your thoughts and prayers. Once he is healed he will be available for adoption.
Thank you for all you do and have done.
Marti and all the grateful FurKids
