Calvin & Hobbs |
Dear Fellow Bichon Lovers,
This week I received an email and video about two little guys, under 10 pounds and a bit more than a year old, who had been dumped in a box at a shelter. They had been attacked by fleas and flies - and were hungry and dirty as well. They were in an overcrowded shelter for more than a week, given no medical attention and scheduled to be put to sleep. A shelter volunteer felt their plight and made a video, hoping to find someone who would take them, and hopefully keep them together. A fellow rescuer received the video and emailed us – asking if we could take these boys (listed as poodles and named Pierre and Maurice.) When we looked at their faces, we knew they were bichons. Tiny, infested, malnourished bichons who had been neglected and ignored.
I tried to walk away, hoping another rescue group would take them. Several groups were interested. Then, after being at the shelter for 10 days, they discovered they had sarcoptic mange – a condition that is very treatable but, left untreated, wreaks havoc on their immune system, causes hair loss and severe itching. That news caused the other rescue groups to walk away. As it got closer to their ‘deadline’ date I was contacted again. Couldn’t we please help these little boys who had been so neglected yet were gentle and loving nonetheless?
We decided we would take them. Our Northern Cal Team Leader, Rebecca, jumped in and made things happen! We changed their names to more bichonly names (Calvin and Hobbs), transported them to a vet to begin treatment and began searching for a foster home for them. They are now at the vet being cared for – and we are looking for a wonderful family to foster them.

We had no sooner rescued Calvin and Hobbs, then we were inundated with more ‘kids’ needing to be rescued. Here are 10 month old Zachary and 4 year old Sydney who we rescued today. And Lilly, whose age we have yet to determine, coming in tomorrow. Unfortunately there are always many more waiting for us to help.

Our greatest need is to find foster homes for these precious little bichons. Most of them warm up immediately in a loving home (especially when there is another little creature that looks a lot like them right there in that home!) Many of these little bichons look and act like the ones you have and love – they are easy to foster and quick for us to place.

Can you open your heart and home for two-three weeks to help us save a life? Please visit our APPLICATIONS page and become a foster mom or dad. You will help save a life and enrich yours.
We also need other volunteers – people who can help with all kinds of ‘projects’ Any skill or talent that you have we will put to great use – and with much appreciation!!! Do you like to organize things? Call people? Drive? Write or make things? The time you can donate will be filled with purpose – and heart-warming rewards.
If you cannot foster or volunteer, a donation is always appreciated.
You can go to our Donations page and use a Credit Card, PayPal or send a check directly to Bichon FurKids Rescue at 6965 El Camino Real, #105-425, La Costa, CA 92009.
What we need most, though, is your help – fostering, volunteering, taking on big projects or smaller ones. PLEASE! Together we are making a difference every day.
Thank you for being the Bichon lovers that you are! And for making it possible for these FurKids to get a second chance – one that they truly deserve
Happy Holiday.
