PAWPRINTS: Are You Ready?!
There is an incredible opportunity to make a difference for the animals through Idaho Gives this year. We need your help to raise $10,000 for our pet medical fund in order to cover some of the basic needs of the animals that come through our doors.
We will also have the Wray & Lani Landon Match Challenge for the Catapalooza fund again this year. The Catapalooza Fund helped SRAS save and adopt out 715 cats last year, boding SRAS as one of the few shelters that adopts out more cats than dogs. Wray & Lani have donated $1000 and have challenged our feline loving friends to help raise or surpass another $1,000, thank you, Wray & Lani!

Five Inmates and 4 dogs graduated from STAND, the St Anthony Training Against Negligence Dog Program, in April. Stand is the name chosen by inmates and Officers at the St. Anthony Work Camp to help inmates remember why they are participating in this unique opportunity. The program, implemented by the Snake River Animal Shelter’s Idaho K-9 Academy, has been an incredible success, helping inmates focus and prepare for their reintegration into society and give back to the community through providing dog training services. STAND started at the end of January and the first dogs graduated in early April to go on to their new-found roles. Officers overseeing the program have noticed a more positive environment at the work camp as all the inmates are improving their behaviors to qualify to be a part of STAND.
There has also been an incredible benefit to the shelter dogs in the program as well. The dogs SRAS entered in the program, ended up in the shelter for one reason or another but had incredible drive that made them ideal for the inmate service training program. Out of 4 dogs, two qualified to become certified service dogs and the other two became incredibly well-trained pets. And today 4 new dogs are at the work camp overcoming significant behavior issues that made the dogs hard or risky adoptions. We will share one of our new service dog stories later in this issue of Pawprints.
In addition to the inmate program, the Idaho K-9 Academy has helped 139 shelter dogs with basic obedience, 46 owned dogs gained behavioral modifications to help them stay in their homes, 1 Therapy Animal was trained and 5 dogs graduated from Basic Group Training. It has been a busy 4 months for dog trainer Coby! SRAS loves this program because both man and beast deserve to be loved and valued and this program is ensuring that in our community.

Sammi & Blade
"Pieced Together" |

There are few things more satisfying than finding a matching puzzle piece but in finding the match of Blade and Sammi, we find the greatest satisfaction that life can offer. Blade was a

cute pup surrendered to SRAS because of a prejudice against pit bulls but fortunately he was a perfect match for our service dog training program at the St, Anthony Work Camp. Fifteen year- old Sammi suffers from PNES (Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures) and was not able to attend school due to the frequency of her seizures and a service dog was her only hope to live a normal life again. It was typical for Sammi to have several seizures within an hour so daily functioning was a challenge to say the least. Blade and Sammi bonded at their.... |

....first introduction at SRAS and for the first time in over a year Sammi went 4 hours without experiencing a single seizure. Her family has reported that her seizures now are more and more rare rather than a common occurrence.
Sammi is now back at school and hopeful to live a normal life integrated with other kids her same age. That is the power of a well-trained pup and the bond between dog and human. To learn more about having a service animal trained through the Idaho K-9 Academy, contact, Coby Voronovich, at:

Spring Gardening Tips for Cat Owners |
It’s springtime, so you know what that means? Cat Gardens! No, we don’t mean we’re growing cats out there (though that would be amazing, so if we ever do figure out how to do that, you’ll be the first to know!). It’s time to start planting a garden that’s the envy of all your neighborhood cats!
We’ll be taking you through three kinds of plants safe for cats, a list of plants poisonous for cats, and a few tips and tricks on how to make your garden extra cat-friendly!

Have You Been Spring Cleaning? |

We would gladly take any gently used items you were considering getting rid of or donating! It would be more convenient for us, since we have limited space, if you can hold on to any items until July 19th and drop them off at Pinecrest Event Center, but we realize that may be a lot to ask and not everyone can do that. If you'd like to donate your items earlier, please contact Kristin Sanger or Wendi Finlayson at the shelter at (208) 523-4219 or email director@snakeriveranimalshelter.org or admin@snakeriveranimalshelter.org. |

SRAS has done an annual rummage sale fundraiser for the animals for more than a decade and typically it has been in April. Not this year! This year’s annual rummage sale will be held at the Pinecrest Event Center (560 E Anderson St, Idaho Falls, ID 83401) on Saturday, July 20th from 8am- 3pm. Mark your calendar and rummage for the cause! |

It's Getting Warmer (Finally!), Prevent Burnt Paws |
With warm weather it is much more appealing to go for walks with your dog. Please remember that concrete, asphalt, metal and rocky surfaces can get very hot! Before getting your dog out on the Greenbelt or other areas where you take your dog for a walk, check the surface where you will be walking. A good way to test the temperature is with the back of your hand. Press the back of your hand on the surface for 5 seconds, if it is too hot for you, it is definitely too hot for your dog. You can choose to walk on a dirt or grass path instead. |

In Loving Memory of Munchkin NiNi |
We offer our love and comfort to our good friends and Legacy Partners, Leon & Laura Watlington. They recently lost their sweet torty kitty Munchkin Ni Ni. They also had their kitty Smokie pass on just 4 months ago and with each loss they have generously donated back to the homeless animals at SRAS. As Legacy Partners, Laura & Leon have pledged their belongings to SRAS when they transition on to be with their fur family. We would like to publicly express our gratitude for this great gift and kindness that will truly carry on a legacy of love and support to the homeless animals at SRAS. Please accept our condolences for your loss of your sweet kitty that brought you so much joy.
Laura & Leon wanted our friends at SRAS to know that memorial giving is an important way to support the animals in need.
